Joining Blue Lake Public Radio’s staff in the spring of 1983, Lazaro Vega has provided listeners with four decades of exceptional Jazz programming, interviews, reviews, and unwavering advocacy of this uniquely American art form. As Jazz Director at BLPR, he is encyclopedic in his knowledge of the medium and well known in the Jazz community both here in west Michigan and nationally. Lazaro continues to bring a unique perspective to his listeners through his musings, storytelling, and interpretations, helping to foster an appreciation of Jazz among both novices and loyalists alike. Like no other, Lazaro is truly one of a kind and Blue Lake is fortunate to be able to call him our own.
Back in 1983, the space shuttle Challenger was launched for the first time, and the first edition of the Apple Macintosh computer went on sale. It was the year the internet was invented. Tensions were high between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, President Ronald Reagan signed the Strategic Defense Initiative, Hurricane Alicia devastated the Texas coast, and US unemployment reached its highest since 1941. It is a good thing Lazaro came along when he did—we all needed some jazz therapy!
