JAZZ FORUM ARTS LAUNCHES NEW CONCERT SERIES WITH DICK HYMAN AND DAVE FRISHBERG JAZZ PIANO SUMMIT

Boasting a spectacular view of Central Park, The Allen Room at Frederick P. Rose Hall -- the new home of Jazz at Lincoln Center at Broadway at 60th Street-- will be the site of the Jazz Piano Summit featuring two legends of the keyboard, Dick Hyman and Dave Frishberg, performing on Two Steinway Grand Pianos. This rare event on Sunday, May 22, 2005, with shows at 7:30 and 9:30 pm, kicks off a new series of concerts presented by Jazz Forum Arts. Performing with Dick Hyman and Dave Frishberg will be Jay Leonhart on bass and Mickey Roker on drums.

The concert is the first in a new series of “Two Steinways, bass and drums" events produced by Jazz Forum Arts Executive Director Mark Morganelli and presented by Jazz Forum Arts at Frederick P. Rose Hall, in its inaugural season as the new home of Jazz at Lincoln Center at Broadway at 60th Street. The original series began in May 1981 at Morganelli's second Jazz Forum loft/club, at Broadway and Bleecker Street, with Tommy Flanagan and Barry Harris performing on Two Steinways, with Art Davis on bass and Leroy Williams on drums.

“I think of our new series in The Allen Room as a homecoming celebration for me and Jazz Forum Arts," said Morganelli. “It was 25 years ago that I started the Jazz Forum in Greenwich Village and 20 years ago that we began Jazz Forum Arts to present the Riverside Park Arts Festival. It's no small coincidence that we've landed in Wynton Marsalis's Jazz at Lincoln Center digs, as he, along with Dizzy Gillespie, was a founding board member of Jazz Forum Arts. I'm especially excited to be collaborating with Wynton and everyone at Jazz at Lincoln Center."

Dick Hyman is an Emmy-winning pianist/composer/arranger with over 100 albums under his own name and many more in support of others. The Jazz Hall of Fame inductee has also composed numerous orchestral works and ballet scores. His work as a New York studio musician has garnered seven Most Valuable Player Awards from NARAS. Hyman was music director for such television programs as Benny Goodman's final appearance (on PBS), and In Performance at the White House, and orchestrated the hit musical Sugar Babies. He was composer/arranger/conductor/pianist for numerous Woody Allen films and others, such as Moonstruck and Scott Joplin-King of Ragtime. In 2004, Hyman stepped down after 20 years as artistic director for the Jazz in July series at New York's 92nd Street Y, but he continues his Jazz Piano at the Y series and also serves as jazz advisor to the Oregon Festival of American Music. Dick Hyman's 100 Years Of Jazz Piano is available as an encyclopedic CD-ROM, and his latest recordings include a trumpet/piano duet with Randy Sandke.

Dave Frishberg studied journalism at the University of Minnesota and spent two years in the Air Force before deciding to take the plunge and try to earn his living playing piano in New York City. During the '60s, Frishberg played in bands led by jazz musicians such as Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Ben Webster, Roy Eldridge, and Gene Krupa and accompanied many singers, including Carmen McRae, Anita O'Day, Irene Kral, Jimmy Rushing, and Susanna McCorkle. During this period, Frishberg wrote many songs that were performed by artists such as O'Day, Blossom Dearie, Al Jarreau, and Cleo Laine. In 1971, he moved to Los Angeles, worked in film and television, and spent a long stint with Herb Alpert. Frishberg then launched his cabaret-style act that combined his superb jazz piano playing with his witty, ironic songs, such as “I'm Hip," “My Attorney Bernie" and “Blizzard Of Lies," beginning a long relationship with Concord Records.

Tickets for Jazz Forum Arts Jazz Piano Summit on Sunday, May 22 at 7:30 and 9:30pm in The Allen Room, are $65, $50, and $35 and can be purchased at the Jazz at Lincoln Center box office (Broadway at 60th Street, ground floor), or through Center Charge, 212.721.6500, or at www.jalc.org.
