Jazz legends Don Burrows and James Morrison will 'sax up' Norfolk Island together this December when they star in the biggest-ever Jazz in the Pines Festival.

The veteran virtuosos and their saxophones will offer a smorgasbord of jazz on the tiny island during the December 5-9 festival.

Highlights will include two concerts featuring all the jazz bands as well as Burrows and Morrison together on stage under a giant marquee amongst the island's trademark pines.

The pair promises to treat the audience to memorable evenings of classic swing, gentle Brazilian bossa nova and exciting modern jazz.

Other acts will include the world acclaimed guitarist Bruce Mathiske, the Joe Chindamo Trio, Steve Taylor-Brown, the Rick Robertson Quartet, and New Zealand's popular “Swing Out" band.

Mathiske, who plays a range of genres from swing to flamenco, Gypsy, Latin, African and swing, was described by the Sydney Morning Herald as “an absolute virtuoso - the best guitarist in Australia".

One of Australia's official Living National Treasures, Don Burrows began his musical career at the age of two by banging up a syncopated storm on his parents' pots and has been at the forefront of the jazz world for most of his 61 years in the business.

Still going strong at 76, the 'father' of Australian jazz has won international acclaim as a composer and multi-instrumentalist, playing the flute, clarinet and saxophone.

His equally famous protg Morrison, 42, began his musical journey when he was given a trumpet at age seven. He fell in love with it but quickly mastered all other wind instruments, performing his first professional gig at the age of 13.

James Morrison joined Don Burrow's band in 1979, before carving his own successful path on the international stage. Both have performed with some of the world's greatest music acts, including Frank Sinatra.
