Jazz, bluegrass, more at roots fest
Devin Phillips escaped hurricane-torn New Orleans into the welcoming arms of the Portland jazz community in September.
A longtime jazz saxophonist who has toured and recorded with artists as diverse as Lenny Kravitz, Herbie Hancock, Los Hombres Calientes and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Phillips was brought to Portland through a program with the Portland Jazz Festival. Musicians from the New Orleans area whose homes were damaged or destroyed in Hurricane Katrina were given room and board in Portland. He likes the city and plans to stay.
“The audiences are really open-minded," he said. “I really didn't think the music scene here was as strong as it is."
Phillips is performing in a four-piece jazz combo at the American Roots Music Festival, which will be on Saturday in Turner. His combo performs at 3 p.m.
