New Orleans, LAJazz Superstar Sonny Rollins returns to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell, as does celebrated pianist-composer Ahmad Jamal, plus Kenny G, Fourplay, Mingus Big Band and The Golden Striker Trio featuring Ron Carter, Mulgrew Miller, and Russell Malone, alongside New Orleans' finest jazz musicians including Pete Fountain, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Terence Blanchard, Nicholas Payton, Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Trombone Shorty and literally hundreds of other local and national jazz artists. On Sunday, May 8, Rollins, who last appeared at the Festival in 1995, will fill the WWOZ Jazz Tent with thousands of the fans who attend the Festival each year to experience jazz in the city where it was born.
Jazz Fest, set for April 29 through May 8, annually celebrates all of the special music, culture and color New Orleans has to offer. Within its overall 12-stage format, the Festival's unparalleled focus on jazz plays out on three performance stages: the WWOZ Jazz Tent, which presents seven days of the finest contemporary jazz in the world; the Peoples Health Economy Hall Tent, dedicated to presenting world-renowned traditional jazz artists from New Orleans and elsewhere; and the Jazz & Heritage Stage, which showcases brass bands and other music related to the roots of jazz. Additionally, the Festival boasts daily second-line jazz parades, as well as jazz on many of the other 12 stages at the Fair Grounds Race Course. It's not called Jazz Fest for nothing!
Now in its fifth decade, the Festival proudly presents artists such as Ellis Marsalis, James Rivers, Lars Edegran and Germaine Bazzle among others who appeared at the first Festival in 1970. Of course, the history of jazz in New Orleans goes back well over 100 years and that fact is clearly illustrated as venerable trumpeter, Lionel Ferbos, celebrates his 100th birthday with a performance on May 6 at the Peoples Health Economy Hall Tent. One of the many jazz highlights over the two weekends include the HaitiNew Orleans Connection, spotlighting the relations between New Orleans music and Haitian folksongs featuring Haitian vocalist Emeline Michel and Dr. Jean Montes of Loyola University along with Dr. Michael White on Friday, April 29.
Just added to the Festival on Thursday, May 5, is vibraphonist-composer Stefon Harris and Blackout. Stefon Harris, heralded as one of the most important young artists in jazz" by The Los Angeles Times, will perform in the WWOZ Jazz Tent.
