Jazz and Classical music to reach sublime heights during opening days of Montreal Chamber Music Festival

Solzhenitsyn, Doxas, Neidich and Rouleau join an international array of artists presenting works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Gershwin and Messiaen

Montréal, May 16, 2005 — The Montreal Chamber Music Festival, which runs from May 26th to June 18th 2005, starts its 10th season off on a high note by presenting three evenings of back-to-back concerts immediately after its prestigious gala event on the 25th of May. Jazz and classical music lovers are invited to congregate at the Festival’s signature site, the Chalet atop Mount Royal. The Montreal Chamber Music Festival is under the direction of its founder, Denis Brott and the Jazz Series artistic direction of Oliver Jones.

Special event May 25th: GALA Soirée Tango A gourmet fundraising cocktail, dinner, silent auction and concert led by special guest André Gagnon, playing rarely performed tango compositions. Other featured artists include Denis Brott, Oliver Jones, Ignat Solzhenitsyn, Scott St. John, Marcus Thompson, James VanDemark, and Denis Plante. This gala event launches the Festival’s 10th season at the Chalet on Wednesday May 25th at 6:30 p.m. Tango dancers will also entertain gala guests, representing the Festival’s multidisciplinary spirit.

May 26: Piano Extraordinaire Festival favourite and son of Nobel prize-winning author Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Ignat Solzhenitsyn is featured in an evening that combines traditional chamber music with more unusual repertoire, including the rarely-played Mendelssohn Sextet. Conductor of the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra and pianist performing with the world’s major orchestras, Solzhenitsyn will be joined this evening by Jonathan Crow, Scott St. John, James VanDemark, Marcus Thompson, Denis Brott and Katerina Juraskova.



May 27: Go for Gershwin! Big Band & Bossa Nova Festival musicians bring the Brazilian bossa nova music of Antonio Carlos Jobim of famous ‘’The Girl from Ipanema’’ fame & the romantic ‘cool jazz’ music of Stan Getz to Montreal this year. Featured artists include Chet Doxas, Eli Haroun, Mike Berard, John Sadoway, Morgan Moore and Jim Doxas. The Montreal Chamber Music Festival 12-member Big Band will make its world premiere this evening, performing works by George Gershwin.

May 28: Music of the Heavens The evening features Quartet for the End of Time, a work composed during the WWII by concentration camp internee Olivier Messiaen. Spoken word and music are married for what promises to be a moving evening as Messiaen’s texts, along with texts from Revelations, are read by world-renowned bassist Joseph Rouleau. Other featured artists include Jonathan Crow, Marcus Thompson, Ursula Oppens, Ramsey Husser and Denis Brott. Mozart’s heavenly Clarinet Quintet will be performed by world-class clarinettist Charles Neidich. A pre-concert lecture, “For the End of Time: The Story of the Messiaen Quartet”, by author Rebecca Rischin, starts at 7 p.m.

Ticket, schedule and site details: Concert tickets, ranging from $25 to $40, can be ordered by telephone at (514) 489-3444 or by email at [email protected]. Special rates are available for seniors and students. All performances begin at 8 p.m. Pre-concert events begin at 7 p.m. All concerts take place at the Chalet atop Mount Royal located less than 15 minutes from downtown Montreal by automobile or public transportation. A free shuttle service departing from the parking lot at Smith House is available to bring concert-goers to the Chalet.
