Saxophonist James Carter has topped a major survey of newer and up-and-coming jazz artists conducted by the Jazz 100 website.

Jazz 100 is the internet's premier website featuring an “all-time best" list of jazz CDs. The site was launched in mid-2002 and quickly established a prominent net presence thanks to the popularity of its Top 200 Jazz CDs list designed for the casual listener.

The site's New Breed 50 list is aimed at bringing long overdue attention to jazz artists that have been active mainly in the 1990s and beyond. The list contains the results of a net survey of jazz critics, record stores and popular polls.

Topping the New Breed 50 list is Carter's outstanding 1994 effort Jurassic Classics , followed closely by trumpeter Wynton Marsalis' Blue Interlude [1991]. Jazz 100 site manager Peter Sykes said that the biggest challenge he faced in putting the list together was in determining the ground rules for qualification.

“The key factors taken into account were the age of the artist and the length of their recording career," Sykes said. “Marsalis would have topped the list had his 1980s output as leader of the Young Lions movement been taken into account. Carter, on the other hand, is a new breed artist through-and-through - rising to prominence in 90s and remaining at or close to the top of the heap right up to the present."

The top ten CDs on the list are as follows:

1) James Carter, Jurassic Classics [1994]
2) Wynton Marsalis, Blue Interlude [1991]
3) Dave Douglas, Soul On Soul [2000]
4) Joshua Redman, Wish [1993]
5) Brad Mehldau, The Art Of Trio - Volume Three [1998]
6) William Parker Quartet, Raining On the Moon [2002]
7) Joe Lovano, From the Soul [1991]
8) Kenny Garrett, Triology [1995]
9) Nicholas Payton, Dear Louis [2001]
10) Branford Marsalis, color=#336633 >Requiem [1999]

The top female vocal CD on the list is Diana Krall's Love Scenes [1997] at #13, while guitarist Bill Frisell tops the guitar category with Have a Little Faith from 1992. The only various artists compilation on the list is The New Young Lions Of Jazz [2001] on the Arkadia label at #34.
