Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey in Philadelphia February 24th @ NXNW

"JFJO burns with a quiet intensity rather than dramatically explode. The musicians play with a coiled looseness, improvising with quicksilver yet deliberate force. You can hear the band's power and inventiveness creatively eroding structure, and the tension produced from that is exhilarating." - Jazz Times

“Reed Mathis delivers soaring, violin-like arco passages, Brian Haas's sparkling, fluid piano runs cluster up and turn heavy and dark just when they need to, and Jason Smart's drumming is clean and impeccable." - Chicago Reader

“...just the sort of jazz album that Charles Mingus could look down from heaven and smile upon!" - Orlando Weekly

Who:
JACOB FRED JAZZ ODYSSEY featuring Brian Haas on piano, Reed Mathis on bass and Jason Smart on drums.

What:
For over a decade the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey have been crisscrossing America, slowly but surely blossoming into one of the most visionary and fearless bands in improvisational music. And to that end, they've developed the hard earned loyalty of a nation of fans whose devotion is steadfast.

JFJO recently signed a national record deal with HYENA Records, a label whose roster includes American music luminaries like James Blood Ulmer, Dr. John and Thelonious Monk, among others. They immediately released their HYENA debut album, Walking With Giants (a prophetic title if there ever was one), which has since been greeted with critical praise. And for good reason. Walking With Giants is quite simply breathtaking. Communicating in their own highly distinct musical language, the trio apply a collective consciousness to their compositions that is a result of an unwavering commitment to improvisation. Brian Haas' recent incorporation of acoustic piano has pointed JFJO's sound to entirely new frontiers. Reed Mathis' violin-esque bass renderings are imbued with a revolutionary spirit, soaring boldly along the horizon. Drummer Jason Smart is insistent but subtle, always enveloped in guiding rhythms that steer the music's ebb and flow.

With a new album, a new record label and renewed energy, it's quite fitting that the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey return to the road to further the journey.
