Now, Legacy Recordings has captured all three dominant feelings of jazz in a new series, Jazz Moods, in stores June 15th, featuring 12 of the most important improvising artists of the past half century.
Under the banner of Cool there are the great trumpeter-innovator Miles Davis, the time-juggling pianist-composer Dave Brubeck, the superb multi-saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr. and the tenor saxophone giant Stan Getz.
Representing jazz's hot side are the inimitable composer Edward Duke" Ellington and his fellow legendary bandleader-pianist William Count" Basie, as well as the torrid trumpeter-flugelhornist Freddie Hubbard, and the widely popular guitarist-singer George Benson.
And when the clock strikes 12 a.m., the Midnight hour is fitting for the pianist-composer Thelonious Monk (who, after all, wrote 'Round Midnight"), the singer-songwriter Billie Holiday (THE Voice of Jazz), and the keyboardists-composers Herbie Hancock and George Duke, both of whom move sinuously between acoustic and electric sounds.
Get in the mood with Jazz Moods.
