About Tutuma Social Club

Tutuma Social Club is the only locale outside Per showcasing both Afro-Peruvian jazz and cuisine on a daily basis and its “no cover charge/no minimum” policy further distinguishes it from other music venues. The new venture is the brainchild of Santina Matwey, a second-generation restaurateur whose family founded and operates the RayBari Pizza parlors in Manhattan, who has effectively imported to New York City the atmosphere found in traditional peñas, the vibrant urban clubs of Peru. Dr. Gabriel Alegra, a jazz trumpeter and composer known as one of the world’s leading proponents of Afro- Peruvian Jazz, is the club’s artistic advisor. Evening sets by established jazz artists from North and South America will be presented Monday-Sunday at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. with “live” music also featured weekdays at lunch and on from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sundays during an Afro-Peruvian Jazz Brunch. Tutuma’s menu was expressly designed by two of Peru’s internationally acclaimed chefs Rodrigo Conroy and Carlos Testino and its kitchen will be open daily from 11 a.m.-2 a.m. A membership rewards program is available to repeat customers.

She can be heard with the Grammy Award winning Maria Schneider Orchestra, the IJQ with Geoffrey Keezer, Project O, Nordic Connect and a number of New York-based bands. In 2003 Jensen was nominated, for the second time, along with trumpeter Dave Douglas, for a Jazz Journalist Association Award and appears yearly in the top five of the Downbeat Critic polls in the Rising Star category on her instrument. She was featured on Gil Evans’ arrangement of “Porgy and Bess” at the San Francisco Jazz Festival, under the direction of Maria Schneider, and was also a guest during the festival’s “Tribute to Woody Shaw and Freddie Hubbard,” alongside Terence Blanchard, Eddie Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson and Kenny Garrett. Some of the musicians Jensen has performed and/or recorded with include; Steve Wilson, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts, Dr.Lonnie Smith, Marc Copland, Bob Berg, Gary Thomas, Gary Bartz, Jeff Hamilton, Bill Stewart, Terri-Lynn Carrington, Geoffrey Keezer, Billy Hart, George Garzone, Chris Connor, Victor Lewis, Clark Terry, Frank Wess, Dr.Billy Taylor and the DIVA Big Band and she also performed on Saturday Night Live with the British soul star, Corrine Bailey Rae. John Wikan – drums New York City-based jazz drummer Jon Wikan has accompanied a cross-section of leaders ranging from singers Ernestine Anderson, Mark Murphy and Freddy Cole to horn players like the late Bud Shank, Pete Cristlieb and Ingrid Jensen. A fixture on the Seattle jazz scene of the mid-1990s, he worked with Jay Thomas, Bill Ramsay and Jim Knapp and was one of the busiest sidemen in the Pacific Northwest backing international artists including Pat LaBarbera, Herb Ellis, John Fedchock, Rick Margitza, Buddy Collette, Roswell Rudd, Mark Murphy, Kurt Elling, Bobby Shew, Brad Turner, Jessica Williams and Dan Faehnle. Wikan has toured Peru three times and takes his cajon (a wooden box drum developed by slaves in Per of West and Central African origins) to all his gigs. He has invented an electric version by attaching sensors and running the drum through an effects loop.

Gabriel Alegra – trumpet / flugelhorn Gabriel Alegra was born in Lima, Peru in 1970 and is one of the most influential figures on his country’s jazz scene. Musically Alegra combines his personal approach to American jazz with a passionate interest and careful study of the music of black coastal Peru. He has contributed a uniquely Afro-Peruvian jazz music concept by incorporating and exploring the common African roots found in both styles. Alegra’s most recent and varied performance credits as a trumpet player, composer and conductor span the globe and include performances and/or recordings with Maria Schneider, Placido Domingo, Ingrid Jensen, Tierney Sutton, Natalie Cole, Bill Watrous, John Thomas, Russ Ferrante, Alex Acuna and The Peruvian National Symphony as well as concerts for the United Nations and various diplomatic missions from around the world. In May 2005 Alegra conducted and recorded Didier Lockwood’s jazz opera “Libertad” commissioned by Radio France and Opera Montpellier. He has conducted “hybrid” concerts featuring the rock band Frgil and Per’s National Symphony and was the subject of a documentary film about Afro- Peruvian music directed by Lonnie Goodwin. Alegra holds a doctorate degree in jazz studies from the University of Southern California, a master’s degree from CUNY and a bachelor’s degree from Kenyon College. He is currently Associate Director of Jazz Studies at New York University where he continues his to increase the awareness of Afro-Peruvian jazz and education.

Freddy “Huevito” Lobaton - percussion / Zapateo dancing Master percussionist and zapateo dancer Freddy “Huevito” Lobaton is from Pamplona Alta, Lima, Peru. He has performed and toured internationally with Afro-Peruvian music luminaries and played and composed for Eva Aylln, Per Negro, Lucila Campos, Guajaja and la Peña Don Porfirio. A member of Per’s legendary Lobaton family, he began developing his skills at the age of four watching his father’s dance troupe rehearse in their living room. Lobatn is considered the world’s leading authority on Peruvian zapateo dancing and one of the most virtuosic percussionists of his generation. His distinctive approach to the cajn, quijada (jawbone) and cajita In a jazz context has made him a pioneer among Afro-Peruvian percussionists and has been an integral part of the Gabriel Alegra Afro-Peruvian Sextet since joining the ensemble in 2004. In 2005 Lobatn was a guest soloist in New York with the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra of a piece for jazz orchestra and zapateador and his work is extensively featured on Alegri’s CD Nuevo Mundo and in live performances by the Afro-Peruvian Sextet.
