Record Labels File Suit Against Ellen Degeneres Show

One day shes a judge, the next a defendant: a consortium of major record labels has filed suit against Ellen DeGeneress syndicated daytime talk show.

Saying that their copyrights to more than 1,000 songs were violated when they were played on the show without their permission, The Associated Press reported. The suit was filed Wednesday in United States District Court in Nashville by labels that include Atlantic, Capitol, Motown, Sony and Warner Brothers.

Jim Carroll, the poet and punk rocker in the outlaw tradition of Rimbaud and Burroughs who chronicled his wild youth in The Basketball Diaries, died Friday at his home in Manhattan. He was 60.

The cause was a heart attack, said Rosemary Carroll, his former wife.

USC Thornton School of Music Receives Major Gifts on 125th Anniversary

As it celebrates its 125th anniversary this academic year, the USC Thornton School of Music said it has recently received some pretty significant birthday presents in the form of money and one very famous piano. Among the pecuniary donations is a $1.25-million gift from Ruth Ross, which the school said will be used to augment the Alice and Eleonore Schoenfeld Scholarship for string students. Pierre Cossette, the avuncular old-school talent agent, manager, music mogul and Broadway producer often called the father of the Grammy Awards telecast for persuading nervous TV executives to put “longhairs with high heels and makeup" on a live national broadcast in 1971, died Friday.
