CLEVELAND--Harvey Pekar, whose autobiographical comic book series “American Splendor" portrayed his unglamorous life with bone-dry honesty and wit, was found dead at home early Monday, authorities said. He was 70. The cause of death was unclear, and an autopsy was planned, officials said. Pekar had prostate cancer, asthma, high blood pressure and depression, said Michael Cannon, a police captain in suburban Cleveland Heights. CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio--Harvey Pekar's life was not an open book. It was an open comic book. Pekar chronicled his life and times in the acclaimed autobiographical comic book series, “American Splendor," portraying himself as a rumpled, depressed, obsessive-compulsive “flunky file clerk" engaged in a constant battle with loneliness and anxiety. On Sunday, August 1st, drummer Rob Henderson will devote his weekly jam session to raise funds for Daphne Fifield, the wife of bassist and jazz filmmaker Jason Fifield. She has breast cancer and the money raised will go to help with medical expenses. The Daphne Fund will be established as a permanent fund for local women jazz and blues musicians who are in crisis due to gender-related illnesses. Show starts at 7-11 p.m. Donation $15.
