St. Louis Jazz Notes by Dean Minderman
In the course of my regular jazz-blogging duties, I run across lots of online music videos that are worth watching but don't necessarily fit the StLJN format. And so was born StLJN's sibling site Heliocentric Worlds, where every day there's a different music video from genres including jazz, blues, soul, funk, classic rock, prog rock, experimental and more.In recent weeks, Heliocentric Worlds has featured artists such as Charles Lloyd, B.B. King, Woody Shaw, Thelonious Monk, David Sanborn, Maceo ...

Cars running on nothing but air could soon start rolling up emissions-free mileage here in the United States. Developed by a former Formula One engineer at the European MDI corporation, the air car is already a working prototype of a personal vehicle utilizing compressed air propulsion. After a round of alleged deals with the Indian Tata motors and various Japanese automakers, MDI has recently licensed the technology to the New York-based Zero Pollution Motors, which plans to build a 6-seat ...

PC Magazine
The open source community and tech-savvy model railroad enthusiasts were handed a victory Wednesday when an appeals court ruled that people who use open source content can be found guilty of copyright infringement if they do not adhere to the license terms set out by the creator. The topic might sound a tad obscure, but it could impact whether or not open-source developers are entitled to monetary damages if people using their software do not adhere to licensing agreements. The ...

Source:
St. Louis Jazz Notes by Dean Minderman
The StLJN jazz site of the week is Night Lights, the online companion to a radio program of the same name that airs Saturday evenings on WFIU (103.7 FM), a public radio station affiliated with Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. The program's host David Brent Johnson uses the Night Lights Web site to provide access to archived audio and playlists for the previous week's program (posted each Monday morning); more important for our purposes, however, he also blogs ...

Judge Buys 'P2P Equals Web Radio' Argument
Source:
PC Magazine
Raise your hand if you think downloading music from file-sharing service Kazaa is just like listening an Internet radio station? No? Anyone? One person who bought that argument is U.S. District Judge Xavier Rodriguez, who lowered the fines imposed on a 16-year-old accused of downloading illegal files from $750 per song to $200 per song after she said she had no idea she was accessing copyrighted material. The ruling is notable given that people facing copyright lawsuits from the Recording ...

Recording Miles Davis' Sound
Source:
All About Jazz
Let me just state off the bat that Miles' music, from Bitches Brew on, is my favorite music on this planet
I'm going to structure this writeup around the albums which have been released from what I believe to be Miles' most exciting and fertile years (1969 through 1975) : classics like Bitches Brew, A Tribute to Jack Johnson, On The Corner, Get Up With It, and Pangaea. By the time 1969 rolled around, Miles had been looking towards and ...

Peter Gabriel: An Old Rocker Gets Digital
Source:
Michael Ricci
WHEN Charles Grimsdale, a British investor, started the Internet music venture OD2 in 1999, he had a hard time persuading large record companies to license their music. But when he approached the rock musician Peter Gabriel about putting his music catalog online, he got a very different response: Mr. Gabriel was not only willing, he also wanted to take a stake in the company. While major record companies have spent heavily on the Internet with relatively little to show, Mr. ...
