A Consumer Reports survey found that more than half of adults who use social networks post information that puts them at risk for identity theft and other cyber crimes. A survey of 2,000 U.S. households in January showed 9% of those who used social networks were victims of malware, identity theft, scams of harassment within the last year, according to Consumers Union, which publishes Consumer Reports. (The group did not say how that rate compares with similar households that do ...

Apple Sells 1 Million iPads, Outdoing First iPhone

Source: Michael Ricci

Apple Inc. said Monday that sales of the iPad have topped 1 million units less than one month after the touch-screen tablet device first went on sale. The company released the WiFi version of the iPad on April 3, while devices that connect to 3G wireless networks went on sale Friday. Recording Studio in a Pocket: Tascam Dr-08 Digital Linear PCM Recorder

Recording Studio in a Pocket: Tascam Dr-08 Digital Linear PCM Recorder

Source: All About Jazz

Audio Recorder Flexes Dual Mics for Strong Fidelity Recording different types of audio is tricky.

One recorder might be great at soaking up a quiet conversation, but take it to a rock concert and your audio will sound like a coffee grinder crammed with ball bearings. That's not the case with Tascam's DR-08. This linear (meaning it doesn't compress sound files) voice recorder, dressed in black and dreamy tangerine, uses tiltable twin microphones to compensate for a wide range of ...

Recording: Crafting the Magic of the Beach Boys

Recording: Crafting the Magic of the Beach Boys

Source: All About Jazz

Ive been lucky to be included in the Beach Boys inner circle since the late 70's and I've worked on many of their records but nothing quite prepared me for being given carte blanche to arrange, record, and produce background vocals for a founding member of one of the greatest vocal bands of all time.

The legendary Al Jardine asked me to help complete a song he had been working on sporadically for 15 years, and when the audio files ...

4 Ways to Survive a Jazz Double Bass Session

4 Ways to Survive a Jazz Double Bass Session

Source: All About Jazz

Many home engineers might cringe in fear at the thought of a double-bass player walking in to record a jazz session. The instrument itself is large, has strings made from sheep's intestines, and isn't likely to show up in your usual rock and roll scene. Not to mention that jazz players aint impressed with hammer-ons, sweep picking, or bitchin' tats, and they play in keys most rock musicians have never even considered. Jazz is its own world with its own ...

Is Anytime Access Worth It? The iPad 3G Review

Is Anytime Access Worth It? The iPad 3G Review

Source: All About Jazz

iPad Wi-Fi + 3G In the five weeks or so that I've been spending time with an iPad, little has made me back off my initial review that while not for everybody, Apple's freshly conceived tablet is indeed a game-changer, a stunner of a machine that promises a profound long-term effect on media, mobile entertainment and publishing. But the Wi-Fi-only iPad model I've been using during this spell has at least one consequential drawback: for all the places that have ...

Net Neut: Webs Users Against Its Gatekeepers

Net Neut: Webs Users Against Its Gatekeepers

Source: Michael Ricci

With the majority of Internet traffic expected to shift to congestion-prone mobile networks, there is growing debate on both sides of the Atlantic about whether operators of the networks should be allowed to treat Web users differently, based on the users consumption. Proponents of the current system called network neutrality see that principle as a kind of civil rights declaration of the digital age, one that requires the gatekeepers of the global Internet to treat all users equally, regardless of ...
