God-F@%&!ing-Damn You, Verizon and Google

God-F@%&!ing-Damn You, Verizon and Google

Source: We All Make Music

A couple of days ago, news started to trickle out about a deal between Verizon and Google that would represent the death of net neutrality.

The deal, which would grant delivery priority to content providers willing to pay a fee, has wide-ranging (and potentially catastrophic) ramifications, but amazingly, one of the most succinct, eloquent explanations came from Google back in 2006:

“Today the Internet is an information highway where anybody—no matter how large or small, how traditional or unconventional—has ...

Thinking Inside the Box, Part Two - Analogue vs. Digital Summing

Source: We All Make Music

efore we take a deeper look at what “summing" actually is, let's briefly recap what we looked at last time. You may remember that we looked at how you could set up your DAW to more closely replicate the workflow (and, to a lesser extent, the look and “feel") of a traditional mixing desk. The natural way to follow this is to look at the final stage of the mixing process: that of mixing everything down to a stereo format ...

An App for Me? Amy Klein on Using MobBase, Part One

Source: We All Make Music

[Editor's Note: Because of how much attention is being paid to things like marketing yourself, mobile music, and apps, we decided that it would be offer an example of what it's like to use one. So we got Amy Klein, who plays guitar in Titus Andronicus, Hillii, and her solo project, Solanin, to try MobBase for a few months, and we'll be publishing her thoughts on the experience in three parts.]

Listen to me when I say that online music ...

NuMuBu: We "Empower" Indie Musicans and Stuff

Source: HypeBot

If nothing else, NuMuBu, self-described as “The Music Industry Network," certainly has some very ambitious goals going for it and, in theory at least, has orchestrated a semi-elaborate system to help fulfill them. Of course, what site these days doesn't promise to “empower" artists and musicians? Oh. All of them.

“NuMuBu makes me feel extra skeptical."

If you watch the video on their site; they have a rather nuanced, yet severely naïve perspective on what's happening to the record industry ...

Since its launch just 8 months ago VEVO, the online music video partnership between the major labels (and WMG) and Google's YouTube has shown impressive growth. But this Media Beat comparison to other sites offers the clearest picture of the service's massive reach.

It's not yet clear exactly how much revenue VEVO is actually returning to its label partners, but here are just a few of the impressive stats (incuding traffic via YouTube):

48 million unique visitors from the US ...
