Happy 25th Anniversary Jazz FM!

Source: Michael Ricci
March 4, 2015

On Wednesday 4th March, Jazz FM celebrates its 25th Anniversary. It all started ten years before launch, in 1980, with a letter to the (then) IBA from Jazz FM co-founder, jazz pianist Dave Lee: “Dear Sir, I hereby apply for a licence to open a jazz radio station in London." Dave had been inspired by listening to jazz radio stations in America while staying in Beverly Hills, making advertising jingles for television. Twenty-five years on, Jazz FM is stronger than ...

It's Time For Artists To Get Paid For AM/FM Plays

Source: HypeBot
February 21, 2015

Many digital services would like to see AM/FM radio pay a performance right, too, but the American federal government is giving giant commercial broadcasters a subsidy—one that’s gone on for nearly a century. The Future of Music Coalition believes its high time to put an end to it. It’s pretty weird when you think about it: when you hear “I Will Always Love You” performed by Whitney Houston on AM/FM radio in the US, neither the Houston estate nor her label get paid. But songwriter Dolly Parton does receive ...

Pandora Has “No Comment” About “Steering” Payola In Direct Deal With Naxos Records

Source: HypeBot
February 20, 2015

Pandora is bringing back the $50 handshake by striking another “direct" deal this week with Naxos Records; and is looking for any pre-ruling leverage that they can find, according to David Lowery of The Trichordist. Ed note - The $50 dollar handshake was record industry slang for the age old practice of illegal payments by record labels to radio stations for preferential airplay. The technique was for a record promoter to palm a $50 bill to a DJ concealed in a handshake.) Pandora announced another “direct” deal this ...

Pandora Tests Direct To Fan Audio Messaging Service For Artists

Source: HypeBot
February 20, 2015
