Farewell Dave Brubeck

RJ on Jazz by R.J. DeLuke
Iconic Pianist/Composer Is American Legend, Icon, Music Master, Worldwide Legend Dave Brubeck would have been 92 today. Instead, the world mourns the loss of his passing yesterday at the age of 91. A master of music, particularly that which we call jazz. He knew and composed much more music than that. He did so much in his storied career that the lengthy obits in major newspapers and the tributes that will come through jazz websites and periodicals can do little ...

On Dave Brubeck

Rifftides by Doug Ramsey

Among the dozens, perhaps hundreds, of obituaries and remembrances of Brubeck that have emerged since his death yesterday morning, a thread becomes clear: those who knew him emphasize that his extraordinary musicianship went hand in hand with kindness, generosity, humor and concern for the ...

JazzINK by Andrea Canter
I think my first Dave Brubeck record, purchased in my teens, was Jazz Impressions of New York. It was his classic quartet with Paul Desmond, but was not to be one of his most popular recordings. No matter. It's the music that got me hooked on Brubeck, and to a large degree, the music that really hooked me on jazz. And maybe his use of odd time signatures trained my ears to appreciate the unexpected in all sorts of music. ...

Yesterday afternoon, my Leisure & Arts editor at the Wall Street Journal called with awful news: pianist-composer Dave Brubeck had died. He then asked if I could turn around an appreciation for Thursday's paper. No problem, I said. But after I filed the piece, the national news section wanted it, and the desk had to trim it considerably for space (go here). Since I loved Dave and his music, I thought I should share with you my longer, original appreciation—pre-haircut... ...

Dave Brubeck is Gone

Rifftides by Doug Ramsey
Dave Brubeck died this morning. He would have celebrated his 92nd birthday tomorrow. Russell Gloyd, Brubeck’s manager and conductor of the pianist and composer’s extendedorchestral works, said that Brubeck suffered cardiac arrest. In fragile health for several years, he was being driven from his home in Wilton Connecticut to an appointment with his heart doctor in nearby Norwalk. For a comprehensive obituary tracing the career that made Brubeck one of the few jazz artists to achieve mass popular acceptance, go ...
