Rashied Ali, a drummer who applied his advanced technique to free jazz, died today in New York. He was 76. Born Robert Patterson, Ali became a disciple and close colleague of his fellow Philadelphian John Coltrane. 'Lit' Drummer Allen Shellenberger Dies of Brain Cancer

The drummer for the rock band 'Lit,' Allen Shellenberger, died on Thursday at age 39 of brain cancer.
Shellenberger was diagnosed in May 2008 with rare form of brain tumor, a malignant glioma. He underwent radiation and chemotherapy treatments at the Cedars-Sinai Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute in Los Angeles.
According to the group's publicist Ken Phillips, Shellenberger was a founding member of the group along with brothers Jeremy and A. Jay Popoff and bassist Kevin Baldes.

After a career as a military musician, Princeton music graduate Harold W. Arberg Sr. later became director of the arts and humanities division of the U.S. Department of Education.

Willy DeVille, who founded the punk group Mink DeVille and was known for his blend of R&B, blues, Dixieland and traditional French Cajun ballads, has died of pancreatic cancer, his publicist Carol Kaye said today. He was 58.
