Wilco :: 05.14.08 :: Downtown :: Lawrence, KS
05.14.08 (before Wilco began) :: Lawrence, KS The last time beer flowed on the streets of downtown Lawrence, Jayhawk fans were celebrating Mario's Miracle as Kansas went on to win the national championship. A little more than five weeks later, there was still cause for celebration: Wilco playing an outdoor show in the middle of downtown at 10th ...

All About Jazz
Glows in the Dark is playing tomorrow night, Tuesday, May 20, at Rumors Boutique as an installment of the Silent Music Revival. The group will be improvising music for a Buster Keaton silent film that they have never seen before, similar to Bill Frisell's notable trio that accompanied Keaton films with prepared compositions.Keaton is best known for his acting in silent films of the 1920s, which take vaudeville influences and employ slapstick comedy along with twisted and tragically ...

Terry Riley:the Cusp of Magic

All About Jazz
By: Josh Potter
The story of American music has largely been that of vernacular traditions - their unlikely origins, evolution, and (ultimate) transcendence. All About Jazz
This new CD by the Bobby Zankel Trio, with the leader on alto, Dylan Taylor on bass and Edgar Bateman on drums, brings free jazz as I like it : straight ahead music, full of direct emotions and lots of space to move in, offering ample opportunity for the musicians to be creative, to work with the material and the ideas offered by the other players. Zankel himself is pretty intense, and at his best in the long improvisations. The ...

Bob Florence

All About Jazz
Bob Florence was best known for his big band arranging, as his Grammy award, thirteen Grammy nominations and two Emmys attest. He died last Thursday at home in Thousand Oaks, California, five days short of his 76th birthday. Florence was also a superb pianist and favorite accompanist of singers. In recent years, in a pan-generational surprise, he hit it off with the adventurous young trumpeter Ingrid Jensen. Florence and Jensen discovered an affinity in a jazz festival after-hours session and, after ...

Whatever Happened to the Overture?
WHO could forget the great overture to A Chorus Line? First there's that infectious hop-step vamp from the song One." Then come some of the show's most familiar melodies: I Hope I Get It," Nothing," What I Did for Love." Finally the orchestra swings back for a rousing half-chorus of One" that would make even gouty musical- theater-phobes want to leap to their feet with excitement. Oh, wait -- A Chorus Line" doesn't have an ...
