Geaux Saints, with a Trumpeter's Fanfare

Ken Franckling's Jazz Notes
Once in a while, jazz and popular culture conveniently cross paths. And how fitting that it was on the sporting world's biggest stage last weekend with the NFL's Super Bowl XLIV festivities. CBS's pre-game broadcast leading up to the New Orleans Saints' gritty, stunning--and most welcome--win over the Colts included Wynton Marsalis's music-and-spoken word tribute to The Big Easy, and the Saints organization's perseverance through 43 years of suffering before this season. He did a masterful job of putting the ...

Source:
HypeBot
On the eve of the band's archives going public at the University of California at Santa Cruz, The Atlantic looks at the business practices of the Grateful Dead and the lessons they can teach any artist or label struggling to connect with and monetize their relationship with an audience.
In many ways The Dead were visionaries who created customer value, promoted social networking, and did strategic planning. Along the way, there are more than one lesson that could have changed ...

All About Jazz
In a move setting up possible future concessions in the European market, an English appellate body has instructed the U.K.'s Competition Commission to mount a new review of the Live Nation-Ticketmaster merger.
The Competition Appeal Tribunal on Thursday set aside the independent review body's unconditional Dec. 22 approval of the splicing of the concert promotion giant and the top ticketing-management firm. The matter was referred back to the Competition Commission, and a new decision is expected within three months. In ...

Dumb Labels, Laws (Not Google) to Blame for Music Blog Deletions
Source:
All About Jazz
Googles deletion of music blogs accused of distributing music without permission has proven to be a controversial topic this week, as one might expect.
Some are calling it Musicblogocide 2010, according to The Guardian, whose in-depth article on the topic is titled: Google shuts down music blogs without warning. Nobody likes to hear that music bloggers who tend to write with infectious enthusiasm benefiting both fans and copyright holders lost years of work when they may not so much have ...

Other Places: Jazzhouse Update
Source:
Rifftides by Doug Ramsey
Author Nick Catalano recently had occasion to revisit the JazzHouse in Copenhagen. The club is the successor to the Montmartre, which presented dozens of the world's best jazz artists in the 1950s and '60s. Rifftides pieces about Bud Powell and the Montmartre's masks stimulated considerable comment. The staff thought you'd be interested in Nick's observations about the JazzHouse.
The atmosphere at Copenhagen JazzHouse is informal, the decor is charming and the crowd is serious. The room was packed on both ...Continue Reading
Copyright Law vs. Art as a Shared Experience
Source:
HypeBot
Mike Masnick of Techdirt writes," ...While people sit back and claim that remixing is stealing"
or lazy" or not art" at all, that's totally missing the point. Art is
not about just the creator. Without the shared experience, it's a lot
less valuable - and what we've done with copyright laws is make it
that much more difficult to share that experience through our own eyes
and our own cultural views. And if you don't see the shame in that,
...

Monk and Mingus in Seattle
Source:
Rifftides by Doug Ramsey
Once in a great while, I encounter a photograph so good that it is necessary to dream up a reason to use it. In the case of this one, no dreaming was necessary. The lighting, sharpness and definition are so right, the shot looks like 3-D. The tenor saxophonist is Hadley Caliman. The conductor is Michael Brockman of the Seattle Jazz Repertory Orchestra. The SRJO is preparing for two concerts called Big Band Monk and Mingus, in early March.
From ...
