Jim Hall: New Toronto Find

Jim Hall: New Toronto Find

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

In 1975, Jim Hall was in Toronto, Canada, appearing at Bourbon Street—a club opened by Doug Cole in the mid-'50s at 180 Queen St. West. The downtown nightspot routinely showcased American jazz artists—usually backed by local rhythm sections. Jim appeared there in June with bassist Don Thompson and drummer Terry Clarke, and the result was Live! (A&M Horizon), widely considered to be one of Jim's finest live trio dates. Over the years, most fans assumed that what we heard on ...

Source: Brian Camelio

A Message from George Wein: “At the 2012 Newport Jazz Festival, Maria Schneider debuted an original work which she composed for her appearance at Newport. It was especially meaningful, as she dedicated the piece to me. Maria funded this work through her own ArtistShare program, but our presentation of her at Newport was made possible by our non-profit status and the many donations we receive from our board members and supporters. Your donation to the Newport Jazz Festival ArtistShare ...

How 1948 Changed Everything

How 1948 Changed Everything

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

In today's Wall Street Journal (go here), I write about the American Federation of Musicians' little-known second recording ban of 1948 and how the 12-month job action unintentionally and dramatically altered jazz and other music styles for the next 50 years. The first AFM recording ban from 1942 to 1944 was an attempt by the union to halt technology's impact on its membership. While radio, the phonograph, records, talkies and the jukebox entertained the country on a national scale in ...

Zappa Project Roxy by Proxy Funding Experiment Receiving Poor Public Response

Zappa Project Roxy by Proxy Funding Experiment Receiving Poor Public Response

Source: HypeBot

The Zappa Family Trust is attempting to raise funds to complete the film The Roxy Performances for theatrical and DVD release. Focused on concerts from 1973, they are offering 1000 people the chance to be a “distributor" with their own copy of the “CD Duplication Master" for $1000. From what I can find, response on the web has been mostly negative with the recurring suggestion that crowdfunding would have been a more appropriate choice. The Roxy Performances is a long ...

Golfing with Branford

Golfing with Branford

Source: RJ on Jazz by R.J. DeLuke

Saxophonist Marsalis Expounds on the State of Jazz While Walking the Links It's not often one gets to chat seriously about music with a top-flight musician who is making his comments in between shots on the golf course. Unusual to say the least. Such was the case recently with Branford Marsalis. Wait. Marsalis? One of the hard-liners from the 1980s? You're fucking with me. Nope. The conversation took place via telephone as Marsalis, wearing an earphone, strode Treyburn Country Club ...
