Quickies: New Release Roundup 2010, Vol. 8
Source:
Something Else!
By Pico Long, established rock acts like Eric Clapton and Heart have nothing more to prove and have plenty enough hits that they really don't need to make records anymore. They still do, of course, but nowadays will go four or five years (or more) before releasing a new album. This happens to be one of those infrequent times for both, which gives rise to the occasion of another New Release Roundup. Along with these two, there's a couple more ...

"It's Glory": The Ear Inn (September 5, 2010)
Source:
Jazz Lives by Michael Steinman
Last Sunday I made my way down to The Ear Inn with great eagerness. Jon-Erik Kellso and Neal Miner were going to be there along with two players making their debuts at 326 Spring Street: altoist Dmitry Baevsky, whom I'd admired on a duet gig with Ehud Asherie at Smalls, and the remarkable guitarist Ray Macchiarola. I wasn't disappointed for a moment, as you shall see and hear. And the guests in the house made the music even more delightful: ...

Voll-Damm Festival Internacional De Jazz De Barcelona
By Seth Abramson It is an extremely rare occurrence in New York for jazz to occupy a large concert venue unassociated with a festival or sponsorship of any kind. Last night celebrated a legendary heavyweight titan in the music and the wait to get inside the Beacon Theater, for those fortunate ticket holders along with the unconventional venue, helped create the aura and electricity of a heavyweight boxing bout from the sport's glory years. This was fitting given that Sonny ...

One Track Mind: Darol Anger and Mike Marshall "Donna Lee" (1988)

Something Else!
By Pico I know exactly what our own Mark Saleski speaks of when he states that music obsessives and regular folks alike know of the song/memory retrieval phenomenonyou hear a song and instantly remember where you were the first time you heard it." Moreover, a song can also be forever associated with an event in your life even if the song doesn't at all speak to the event. It just happened to be playing at the time. That's why for ...

The Marsalis Family, Music Redeems (CD Review)
Source:
Between the Grooves with Philip Booth
All of the jazz-playing Marsalises together, on one stage? It rarely happens, but it's impressive when it does. My review of their new CD, documenting a live performance, was published this week in Las Vegas City Life. Click here to go to the paper's site, or read the full text below. The Marsalis Family, Music Redeems (Marsalis Music) Marsalis has become a brand name in music, denoting a New Orleans dynasty as well as a hard-fought commitment to playing deep-rooted ...

AAJ Staff
Chestnut's Sophomore CD for the Label and Return to Piano Trio Format Features Dezron Douglas and Neal Smith Available September 28 When a young musician makes a sensational debut, it's a moment that's thrilling and yet also familiar; similar fireworks flash with the arrival of each successive prodigy. But when that musician achieves true insight, through talent informed by experience, and lifts his work into a higher realm of achievement, that is a real milestone, rare and sublime. Arguably, Cyrus ...
