Stefon Harris, David Sánchez And Christian Scott Go The Distance On Collaborative Recording "Ninety Miles"
Source:
Michael Ricci
Special 2-Disc CD/DVD Package, Ninety Miles, unites North American, Puerto Rican and Cuban jazz artists and will be released June 21, 2011 All distance is relative, especially where geopolitical borders and ideologies are involved. We speak one language, they speak another. We follow our system, they follow theirs. When we focus on the differences, a relatively short stretch of land or water starts to look like a yawning chasm. But when we look at each other as individuals and focus ...

Starlicker Trio (Mazurek, Adasiewicz, Herndon) Turns up the Heat on "Double Demon"
Source:
Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards
The trio Starlicker (as heard on their release Double Demon, Delmark DE2011) is not your usual line-up playing the usual sorts of things. First off the instrumentation is not at all the norm. There's Rob Mazurek on cornet, Jason Adasiewicz, vibes, and John Herndon on drums. What this means in terms of sound has much to do with how the band approaches what could be a somewhat quieter ambiance, especially compared with Mazurek's large ensemble Exploding Star Orchestra (see this ...

David Gibson - End of the Tunnel (2011)
Source:
Something Else!
The sweet, liquid and brassy sound of a trombone has been a major cog in the jazz machine since around its inception, bigger at some times more than at others. These days, it doesn't enjoy the stature and popularity it used to, and I often wonder why when I listen to a record by, say, Curtis Fuller or a fresher face like Michael Dease. Add David Gibson to that too-small group of the current generation of trombone players. The former ...

"Art Pepper: Blues for the Fisherman / Complete," Vol. VI in the "Unreleased Art" Series, to be Released by Widow's Taste Records June 14
Source:

"The Twelve Bars of the Decade." Blues for the Fisherman was hailed by one jazz journalist as just that when four of these tracks were released in the U.K. in 1980 by Mole Jazz. That LP remained at the top of the British jazz charts for well over a year, so Mole eventually released a second album from the same session. Fans all over the world have worn those LPs out and have been clamoring for 30 years to hear ...

From Russia to Carnegie Hall: Violinist Leonid Levin's journey reflected on new CD
Source:
Lauren Rogers
Leonid Levin's violin has logged more miles than the average person. It has taken its owner far, this beloved instrument. At this point it has become an extension of Levin himself, his right-hand man, his brother in arms. From his humble roots studying music in Moscow, Russia so many years ago, Levin and his violin have travelled far and wide, often entering a twilight zone wherein dreams become reality. In his life as a hard-working musician, Levin has already experienced ...

40th Anniversary of Marvin Gaye's Landmark "What's Going On" Celebrated with Super Deluxe Edition & Events
Source:
Universal Music Enterprises
On May 21, 1971, Motown Records released an album unique to its vast, already classic catalog: a suite of protest songs, railing, albeit softly and with an undeniable groove, about the planet's woes and the pain of war. With What's Going On, Marvin Gaye forever changed the sound and subject matter of popular music, influencing and inspiring every generation since. Formerly Motown's reigning smooth-faced, smiling, mass-appeal artist, this album was Gaye's departure for the bearded, brooding, reflective, angry artist he ...

Lalo Schifrin "Pussycat, Pussycat, I Love You"
Source:
Sound Insights by Doug Payne
First, a little history. In 1965, Woody Allen's comedy What's New Pussycat? became a surprise hit, boasting an all-star cast including Peter Sellers, Peter O'Toole, Romy Schneider, Capuchine, Paula Prentiss and Ursula Andress. Tom Jones' performance of Burt Bacharach's title song also became a hit, goofy as it is, becoming even more memorable and enduringly campy than the film itself. Five years later, for whatever reason, a sequel/remake was released called Pussycat, Pussycat, I Love Youa title derived from Hal ...
