Nate Wooley - Trumpet/Amplifier (Smeraldina-Rima 2011) *****

Nate Wooley - Trumpet/Amplifier (Smeraldina-Rima 2011) *****

Source: Free Jazz by Stef Gijssels

By Joe Higham This is one of the strangest records I've listened to in a while, and yet it's also an easy record to give 5 stars to simply because what you hear on this record defies any expectations of what a solo trumpet record, even with an amplifier, would or should sound like. It's this second element, the amplifier, which defines the outcome of Nate Wooley's sound explorations. I use the expression 'sound exploration' as what you hear on ...

Recent Listening: Carter, Raney, Broadbent, Deardorf

Recent Listening: Carter, Raney, Broadbent, Deardorf

Source: Rifftides by Doug Ramsey

James Carter, Caribbean Rhapsody (Emarcy) Carter tailors his saxophone virtuosity to “Caribbean Rhapsody" and “Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra," by theAmerican composer Roberto Sierra. Sierra studied with György Ligeti, the Hungarian master of tone clusters and chromaticism, but there is no Ligeti atonality here. Sierra bases the pieces in lyricism and accessible melody. In the concerto with the Sinfonia Varsonia of Poland, and the rhapsody with a string quintet led by cellist Akua Dixon, Carter moderates the tendency toward excess ...

Re-Introducing Aimée Allen Aimée Allen—vocals Pete McCann—guitar Toru Dodo—piano Craig Akin—bass Jacob Melchior—drums and percussion Victor Prieto—accordion Aimée Allen's intimate connection with music began as a child. Her childhood was literally scored with classic jazz, because of her mother's intense love of the music. The influence of the jazz tradition can be heard in Aimée's musical style and interpretation choices. But Aimée's listeners can also hear her individual voice, nuanced ...

David Borgo, with and Against, 1998

David Borgo, with and Against, 1998

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards

I've been covering David Borgo's music on these pages with a number of postings (do a search in the search box to find the others). That's because I find him one of the important West Coast voices today, as tenor-soprano stylist and as composer-conceptualist. If I retrace steps today to go back to one of his first (if not THE first), it's because I find it a worthwhile listen, and also because it is still available on CD Baby. I ...

One Track Mind: Michael Wolff on Songs with Cannonball Adderley, Warren Zevon, Others

Source: Something Else!

On this special edition of Something Else! Reviews' One Track Mind, we hand the reins over to jazz pianist Michael Wolff. He shares insights into an Indian-inflected collaboration with Charlie Hunter, the lasting allures of funk classics like the Temptations “Papa Was a Rolling Stone," the friendship that grew from collaborating with Warren Zevon and what led him back to Joe Zawinul's classic “74 Miles Away" ... “PINOCCHIO," solo (JUMPSTART, 1995): Coming off a run as the funky bandleader of ...

The New Gary Burton Quartet - Common Ground (2011)

The New Gary Burton Quartet - Common Ground (2011)

Source: Something Else!

Vibraphonist Gary Burton's entire career as a musician has been about thinking outside the box and exploring new frontiers in jazz music. When he was only seventeen years old, his first recording date was with country and western guitar great Hank Garland making a (gasp!) jazz album (Jazz Winds From a New Direction (1961), and damned impressive one at that. Later on, Burton invented the four mallet technique, greatly extending the harmonic possibilities of the vibraphone. And as noted in ...

Iola Brubeck Digs Disney

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Following my post yesterday on Dave Brubeck's Dave Digs Disney (1957), I heard from Iola Brubeck, Dave's wife. The album has been newly remastered and reissued by Sony/Legacy in mono and stereo versions plus alternate takes. If you were ever a kid, you'll love the new release, which is brimming with childlike optimism and energy. [Pictured: Iola and Dave Brubeck] Here's Iola's email to me: “Dave Digs Disney has always been one of Dave's favorites. As you noted in your ...
