For drummer Kentaro Nakayama, the road to New York's jazz scene consisted of millions of miles and a number of different calendars. Now recording music for various film, TV, and advertising projects, Nakayama cannot forget the different paths that he took which led him to where he is today. Nor can he lose sight of his ultimate goal. “I want to keep playing music until I die," Nakayama revealed. Born in Tokyo, Japan, Nakayama moved to Boston, MA in 2006 ...

Acclaimed German guitarist Martin Schulte redefines contemporary jazz on new CD

Source: Lauren Rogers
June 12, 2011

In his young, tragic life, Kurt Cobain probably never imagined one of his songs would be converted into a freewheeling jazz number. But that's exactly what guitarist Martin Schulte accomplishes on his new album, In Transit, reworking Nirvana's 1993 fuzz bomb “Heart-Shaped Box" into quirky, screeching jazz, complete with sizzling saxophone and Schulte capturing the soft/loud pattern of the original albeit minus the rock element. Indeed, this is not your father's jazz. Born in Cologne, Germany in 1979, Schulte belongs ...

The Friday Morning Listen: Ghost Train Orchestra - Hothouse Stomp (2011)

Source: Something Else!
June 11, 2011

Before I get to the part of the article where I piss off the Ken Burns jazz fans, let me rant a little about something completely (well, almost) unrelated. So I'm minding my own business the other day when I see this tweet (Hmmm ... if somebody reads this twenty years from now, will the word “tweet" still make sense?) about the phenomenon of anti-intellectualism in the geek world. Sanger's article was quite interesting (if depressing), touching on the recent ...

Craig Taborn - Avenging Angel (ECM, 2011)

Source: Music and More by Tim Niland
June 10, 2011

Pianist Craig Taborn has taken his time in becoming a band leader. He has led some interesting electric units, and has apprenticed with seemingly everyone of note from James Carter to Roscoe Mitchell and beyond. This album find him stripped of all of his electronic effects, focusing on solo acoustic piano in an intimate and detailed atmosphere. Texture and dynamics are the key to the success of the album, at times he develops spare motifs using the bass notes of ...

Trey Gunn - Untune the Sky (2004)

Source: Something Else!
June 10, 2011

By Tom Johnson Newly free of King Crimson in 2004, some wondered just what it was that Warr guitarist Trey Gunn would be doing. A great short answer came in the form of Untune the Sky, a combination CD/DVD package. The CD takes the shape of a best-of, with a good selection of material from across Gunn's five solo albums (one of which is live) and his project with fellow King Crimson mate Robert Fripp and drummer Bill Reiflin (Ministry, ...

Reed Trio - Last Train to the First Station (Kilogram Records 2011) ****a1/2

Source: Free Jazz by Stef Gijssels
June 10, 2011

This recent release, 'Last Train to the First Station' by the Reed Trio is just one of the many current albums and groups in which he is a member. The Reed Trio is Vandermark on clarinet, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, Mikolaj Trzaska on bass clarinet, alto saxophone, c-melody saxophone and Waclaw Zimpel on clarinet, bass clarinet, and tarogato. Without traditional (or any) rhythm section, the trio has been described as a more ...
