Sean Nowell - Stockholm Swingin' (2011)
Source:
Something Else!
A blossoming career that started in Birmingham, Alabama recently had a stop all the way over in Stockholm, Sweden. For tenor saxophonist Sean Nowell's third album (all of which are on Posi-Tone Records, by the way), Nowell and drummer Joe Abba flew over to Sweden, joined Frederik Olsson (guitar), Leo Lindberg (piano), and Lars Ekman (bass), toured the country for two weeks, and ended the jaunt at the legendary Glenn Miller Cafe in the capital city. Stockholm Swingin' is a ...

Human Element - The Human Element (2011)
Source:
Something Else!
Easy comparisons arrive quickly as the new self-titled Abstract Logix debut release by Human Element spins, since the group has connections to the original pioneers who fused jazz and world music. In fact, this nascent supergroup includes ex-members of the Joe Zawinul, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Al Di Meola and Herbie Hancock bands. But Human Element's undulating post-modern groove is sent to new heights by the combined contribution of tribal vocals and compelling percussion by Arto Tuncboyaciyan. There are plenty ...

Brazilian jazz and classical music unite on Dumee & Dijkgraaf Quinteto’s new album
Source:
Lauren Rogers
All it takes is one listen to Cipriano" to be reeled in by the sublime guitar work of Jan Dumee. The fifth track from Dumee & Dijkgraaf Quinteto's new album, Heloisando, Cipriano" features some of the dreamiest guitar playing that can be found on any record this year. Oddly enough, Dumee's relationship with the guitar was not instantly formed. I've never particularly had a fondness for the instrument," Dumee admitted. Usually it was the music itself that attracted me. I ...

Sir Roland Hanna Piano Solo: Colors from a Giant's Kit
Source:
Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards
Like Jaki Byard, Roland Hanna was a pianist who had absorbed the entire jazz tradition and his playing reflected that. His posthumously released solo session, Colors from A Giant's Kit (IPO), finds him in the mood to cover a lot of ground. There are some quite fetching originals and well-chosen standards, from Duke through Trane. All of it shows us a more intimate side of Hanna that what you'd get, say, in his work with the Jones-Lewis band. His more ...

Alice Coltrane - Universal Consciousnes /Lord of Lords (Impulse!, 2011)
Source:
Music and More by Tim Niland
After the death of her husband and bandleader, the legendary John Coltrane, Alice Coltrane continued to record for Impulse Records for another few years before retreating to her ashram to concentrate on her spiritual concerns. Spirituality has always been the prime concern of her music, and the selections move farther and farther away from jazz into a somber liturgical music that is nonetheless fascinating to listen to. The first part of this collection is very enjoyable because it focuses on ...
