Augusto Pirodda, with Paul Motian and Gary Peacock - No Comment (2011)

Augusto Pirodda, with Paul Motian and Gary Peacock - No Comment (2011)

Source: Something Else!

Pianist Augusto Pirodda, on his fifth long player, plays with the melodic, insinuating sensitivity that belies his brief recording career. In fact, No Comment, put to tape in 2009 but just out on the German label Jazzwerkstatt, is often off-handedly bold in that way. The opener, “It Begins Like This," is actually the initial soundcheck performed with drummer Paul Motian and bassist Gary Peacock. They seem to have quickly settled, unbidden, into symbiotic roles. Pirodda's “So?" finds the pianist slowly ...

Various Artists - Music Inside: A Collaboration Dedicated to Waylon Jennings (2011)

Source: Something Else!

By Fred Phillips Ah, the tribute album. It started out as a good idea—current artists getting together to salute a classic artist that had a major influence on them. But, then, it spiraled out of control. All of a sudden, everyone had a tribute. In the metal and hard rock world, small record labels sprang up that released nothing but tribute albums, often to bands that had only released a record or two. I remember once stumbling across a tribute ...

Bix Beiderbecke's Last Recording

Bix Beiderbecke's Last Recording

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Eighty years ago tomorrow evening, cornetist Bix Beiderbecke flew into a fit of insanity at his home in Queens, N.Y., and promptly died. He was 28 years old. Beiderbecke was a long-time abuser of alcohol at a time when liquor wasn't federally regulated since it was illegal, and most spirits contained little more than amber-tinted isopropyl. Over time, Beiderbecke drank himself to death. He was the Amy Winehouse of his day. In the late '20s, Beiderbecke wasn't the hottest or ...

Mal Waldron Quintet - The Git Go-Live at the Village Vanguard

Mal Waldron Quintet - The Git Go-Live at the Village Vanguard

Source: Music and More by Tim Niland

Pianist and composer Mal Waldron is something of an unsung hero in jazz, despite a lengthy career that featured him doing everything from recording with John Coltrane and Billie Holiday in the 1950's to recording duets with the likes of Archie Shepp and David Murray in the early 2000's just prior to his passing. In between, Maldron was a dependable journeyman, making a lot of records from many labels, like this set, which was recorded at the venerable Village Vanguard ...

Pianist/keyboardist Mike DiLorenzo revives '70s funk with jazz flavor on new album

Source: Lauren Rogers

Call it old school but the sweltering mélange of jazz, funk, and soul that characterizes pianist/keyboardist Mike DiLorenzo's new album Bring It Back defines timelessness. The early '70s was a golden age for R&B music as artists as diverse as Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder adopted elements of jazz and filtered them through a pop framework, creating infectious, raw streetwise rhythms that lit dance clubs on fire. Their influence was so extraordinary that it can be felt throughout ...

William Hooker Duets with Thomas Chapin! "Crossing Points" Documents the Convergence.

William Hooker Duets with Thomas Chapin! "Crossing Points" Documents the Convergence.

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards

I have a friend who is dedicated to the music. He prides himself on NOT being a collector, of not making a fetish out of owning thousands upon thousands of recordings to line up in long rows and nod knowingly about the music when guests arrive. “Yes, you see I own all this music, so you know that I know all about it." He doesn't imply that. He rejects it. He is in the music for the music. Yet his ...

The Dave King Trucking Company - Good Old Light (Sunnyside, 2011)

The Dave King Trucking Company - Good Old Light (Sunnyside, 2011)

Source: Music and More by Tim Niland

Drummer Dave King is the lynchpin of many a group, notably The Bad Plus collective and his own Happy Apple. This new group merges his influences from the music of Nashville to the hard-hitting jazz of John Coltrane. King has the reputation of a bit of a brute behind the kit, something of a diabolical crossbreed between Elvin Jones and Keith Moon, but as this album demonstrates, he has a lot more at his disposal than raw power. He is ...
