Vocalist Solitaire Miles will be releasing a new recording with Chicago swing violinist Johnny Frigo on her new CD Melancholy Lullaby which is dated to release on September 21, 2011 in Chicago at the Jazz Showcase. The track, I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" was recorded for their first release in 1996, but was never released and has been remixed and remastered for Miles' new album. I'm very pleased to present this unreleased recording from the late swing violinist Johnny Frigo ...

Fred Ho Gets Very Serious on "Big Red!"
Source:
Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards
Fred Ho is a composer-instrumentalist-bandleader with a complex attitude toward his Chinese-Asian ancestry, the homeland and its contemporary historical stance, the Afro-American culture from which his music in part derives, and commercial culture in general and of America in particular. I won't begin to try and describe that attitude, except to say that his music reflects the multiplicity of factors that go into who he is today. Big Red! (Innova 794), the latest in a series of albums by his ...

Red Trio + John Butcher - Empire (Nobusiness, 2011)
Source:
Music and More by Tim Niland
The RED Trio is a free-jazz group based in Lisbon, made up of Rodrigo Pinheiro on piano, Hernani Faustino on bass and Gabriel Ferrandini on drums and percussion. For their second album they had the good fortune to welcome a special guest, British saxophonist John Butcher, a revered figure in the European free-improvisation scene. This collaboration works very well, through an album of increasingly lengthy tracks, the group melds its musical minds to collectively explore the far reaches of free-jazz ...

Quintus McCormick - Put It on Me! (2011)
Source:
Something Else!
Quintus McCormick doesn't quibble with genre on this new project from Delmark Records. Instead, he sings with a remarkable facility, at once bright and sweet then hard and accusatory, sounding at times like some after-midnight deep bluesman and then like a spit-shined mainstream soulsterand moving, along the way, well outside of any neat modern-day pre-packaging. Put It On Me! illustrates, definitively, that he can look, and this is such a rarity, both forward and back. And so, we have McCormick ...

Something Else! Sneak Peek: Warren Wolf, "427 Mass Ave." (2011)
Source:
Something Else!
Vibraphonist Warren Wolf is very, very talented, something he might have been aware of when he titled a past release Incredible Jazz Vibes, with a cover which looks conspicuously like Wes Montgomery's for The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery. But even if Wolf might think he's incredible, so what: bass master Christian McBride has thought so himself for ten years, since Wolf was a student at Berklee School of Music in Boston. Wolf is also said to be proficient ...
