Jazz Duo Tele-Phonic Releases Debut Album
Source:
Dave Scoven
Jazz duo Tele-Phonic has released their first album, Conversations, on the Turn Basin record label. 'Conversations' is 12 tracks of structured improvisation and spontaneous composition that spans world music influences from Latin America, Africa, Asia and America. It's odd. Ninety-five percent of what we do is spontaneous composition, although it seldom sounds like it, says drummer/percussionist Dave Scoven. If there are any overdubs at all, it's very minor stuff. Gary [Titi, the duo's guitarist] can do amazing things with live ...

Craig Taborn - Junk Magic (2004)
Source:
Something Else!
by Tom Johnson Another slab of envelope-pushing jazz from Craig Taborn, one that relies heavily on the strong improvisatory skills of the band backing his keyboards and piano. The result is a slightly more ambient atmosphere than one would normally associate with Taborn, but it does not come across feeling foreign or forced, possibly due to the presence of violinist Mat Maneriwhose own work seems to specialize in a similar, angular attack on jazz. Often, the music comes across reminiscent ...

John Blum Astrogeny Quartet and Farewell Denis Charles
Source:
Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards
John Blum played piano on several cuts of Sunny Murray's excellent Perles Noires Eremite two-CD set. Beyond that his Astrogeny Quartet (Eremite 049) is my first exposure to his playing in depth. The album has a classic free-new thing ring to it, thanks to all involved. William Parker centers the music with his usual very strong and personal approach. Denis Charles. a drummer who has not been given the recognition he deserves, fleshes out the freetime barrage with shifts in ...

Deep Blue Organ Trio - Wonderful!
Source:
Music and More by Tim Niland
Carrying the torch of the great blues, bop and ballad organ trios of the past, the DBOT plays straight-ahead swinging jazz, that is accessible to fans of Hammond Heroes like Jimmy Smith and Richard Groove" Holmes. The trio is a deeply integrated unit consisting of Chris Foreman on Hammond B3 Organ, Bobby Broom on guitar, and Greg Rockingham drums. The band has an appealing sound, with Broom's guitar coming out of the Grant Green school (he's played with the likes ...

America - Back Pages (2011)
Source:
Something Else!
The last week of July was an occasion of joy and pain for the folk-rock group America. Two days after founding ex-member Dan Peek passed away at the age of 60, America released their first album since 2007's return-to-form Here And Now. Back Pages continues with the return to the classic sound, but with a twist: none of the songs were written by either Dewey Bunnell nor Gerry Buckley. This is a covers album, a turn Pat Metheny and even ...

Steve Cropper - Dedicated (2011)
Source:
Something Else!
Tribute records are a tricky things; star-studded tribute projects even more so. It takes a strong unifying voice, some central character beyond the featured composer, to save them from sounding like choppy compilations. Steve Cropper, on today's 429 Records release Dedicated, is that voice. Co-founder of Booker T and the MGs, and a key sessions player and producer on a host of seminal soul records for Stax and Atlantic, Cropper had long credited North Carolina's 5 Royales and their leader ...
