Stan Killian - Unified (2011)
Source:
Something Else!
Stan Killian's Unified is an attractive album right from the first listen. Actually, even before that first listen. Checking out the names of horn players playing alongside Killian listed on the back cover of the CD case, I saw there was already a recipe for success: Dave Binney (alto sax), Jeremy Pelt (trumpet) and Roy Hargrove (trumpet). But upon taking in this album, it became appealing for another reason, a reason I couldn't nail down until I read these words ...

Guitarist John Basile Releases "Amplitudes" on Stringtime Jazz
Source:
John Basile
Guitarist John Basile returns with a unique solo project featuring multiple guitars in an improvisational journey through a unique selection of material. In a somewhat strange twist of fate, Amplitudes came about as a direct result of using an iPhone app simply as the sketchpad for the multiple guitar tracks recorded here that hopefully reflect a certain perspective of what jazz guitar is for me. Though initially intended as references for performances with perhaps another guitarist or instrumentalist, the ...

Athenor - En Form for Bla (VHF Records, 2011)
Source:
Music and More by Tim Niland
A collective of musicians from the avant rock/free improvisation scene, Aethenor creates some unusual and continually fascinating soundscapes. Consisting of Stephen O'Malley, Daniel O'Sullivan, Kristoffer Rygg, and Steve Noble, the group strives to create a sound that is somewhere in the twilight nether-regions where progressive rock, ambient textures and In a Silent Waytype jazz improvisation all combine and coalesce into a unique musical form. The music has a spacious beginning as the musicians grapple for purchase on the wide open ...

Canned Heat, Featuring Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown - Live at Montreux 1973 (2011)
Source:
Something Else!
Canned Heat, the doomed boogie-blues revivalists, only made a lone appearance at the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival. Yet they still managed some star-crossed magic. By 1973, co-frontman Alan Blind Owl" Wilson had already tragically passed, an overdose victim at just 27. Stepping in, however, with Bob The Bear" Hite and the rest of his Delta-rocking brethren was Clarence Gatemouth" Brown, giving this recording a vibrating once-in-a-lifetime specialness. Already huge festival draws, after signature appearances at Monterey Pop in 1967 and ...

Trumpet Ace Melvin Jones Hits Straight to the Core on His "Pivot" Album
Source:
Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards
I am not going to mess with a lot of words today. That's because a lot of words are not needed to capture what Melvin Jones's Pivot (Turnaround 1004) is all about. Mr. Jones plays trumpet with a brash and bold extroversion that puts him in the Lee Morgan-Freddie Hubbard-Woody Shaw bracket. Hook him up with a very hot band (like the one here), let him get his own tunes in there, and let loose. This is music with that ...

Charles Lloyd - Jumping the Creek (2005)
Source:
Something Else!
By Mark Saleski Listeners come to jazz from many directions. They may have a natural attraction to it. Jazz may have been the predominant music playing on their parents' home stereo (though that kind of situation has been known to drive a person in the opposite direction). They may even have played an instrument at a young age and gone on to stay with the music they were immersed in while learning their charts. Then, there's the gateway record." This ...
