Lazsar Music released "From Vegas With Love" from singer-songwriter Sarah Montes

Source: Sarah Montes
November 21, 2011

From Vegas With Love, re-establishes a musical sound reminiscent of the 1940's and 50's suggesting similarities to Cole Porter, Peggy Lee, Doris Day Louis Armstrong and Glen Miller; combined with cosmopolitan lyrics that are delightfully amusing, engaging, emotionally intimate and some times spicy with persuasive feminine charm. The songs themselves are candid and mature. Sarah's voice expresses her true love for singing and delivers moments of vulnerability that are undeniably delicious! “Sarah Montes, an alluring singer." Yotam, with Roy Hargrove, Claudio Roditi and Paquito D'Rivera - Brasil (2011)

Source: Something Else!
November 21, 2011

A lesser talent than Israeli guitarist-composer Yotam might have gotten lost in this project. It's not just that Brasil, issued last week by Jazz Legacy Production, features notable stateside jazz stars like Roy Hargrove, Claudio Roditi and Paquito D'Rivera, or even that he's updating familiar compositions by the likes of Antonio Carlos Jobim, or that he completed the sessions with a group of notable Brazilian heroes like drummer-percussionist Vanderlei Pereira, pianist David Feldman and guitarist Toninho Horta. It's all of ...

Tony Malaby - Novela (Clean Feed, 2011) *****

Source: Free Jazz by Stef Gijssels
November 21, 2011

By Paul Acquaro Novela by Tony Malaby is a real treat. It tantalizes the senses with its complex yet accessible horn arrangements, burns with a restrained energy that propels the soloists and builds so imperceptibly that by time we are half way into the first piece, “Floating Head," and the piano's slightly disjointed but flowing phrases come to the fore, we are ready for a slight breather. The bass clarinet phrases with the horn and drum hits below the soloing ...

Singer/songwriter Jay Brown of the Lazybirds reaches into folk and country influences on new solo album

Source: Graham Taylor
November 21, 2011

Just because Jay Brown is in the Lazybirds doesn't mean he is one. On the contrary, Brown is probably one of the busiest young musicians in the scene. With the Lazybirds, Brown has gradually built a devoted fan base with the group's foot-stomping hybrid of ragtime and blues; moreover, Brown's tireless work ethic and creative versatility is expansive enough to find its presence known in the vintage jazz of Swing Guitars and the spicy world music of Shantavaani. However, the ...

Brian Ho hits all cylinders with Hammond B3 Organ on new CD

Source: Lauren Rogers
November 20, 2011

There is electricity in the air. On Organic, the latest album from Brian Ho, the music is energetic enough to generate a thunderous charge; Ho and his bandmates sizzle with force and precision. When a group is hitting all cylinders such as this, all that one can do is sit back and watch the fireworks. Prepare to be shocked and awed. A collection of Ho's original material as well as a few covers, Organic is remarkably consistent; whether performing his ...

Thom Gossage Other Voices - In Other Words (2011)

Source: Something Else!
November 20, 2011

As an aside within my review of Steve Raegele's mind blowing debut album Last Century I went into the bands Raegele had participated in and noted “I can't say I've heard of these names previously, but the (Thom) Gossage (Other Voices) tracks I just sampled make me want to hear more from him. It's a little avant-garde, too, but nothing compared to what Raegele is puttin' down." I finally got to hear more recently when the Canadian drummer, composer and ...
