Dave Hertzberg's Hearts & Bones unite bluegrass and jazz with infectious melodies on new CD

Source: Lauren Rogers
November 27, 2011

It is no exaggeration when Dave Hertzberg's Hearts & Bones claim that they are “Busting Out of the Gate" on their latest album, Don't Lose Sight of Your Song. Hertzberg's jamming bass, Alan Grubner's scorching fiddle, Rick Snell's rocking acoustic guitar, Joel Arnow's slamming drums, and Itai Kriss' soaring flute rattle the windows like a high-impact earthquake. No doubt about it: This is a band with relentless energy, but also one with a keen ear for infectious melodies. Grubner's fiddling ...

Bill Dixon - Bill Dixon with the Exploding Star Orchestra (2008)

Source: Something Else!
November 27, 2011

had this discussion about jazz with a friend of mine once. He really couldn't deal the sound of a full-bore, large-scale ensemble (he doesn't like any jazz, honestly, but that's sort of irrelevant here). I can't remember exactly what CD was playing in my car, but it seemed to make him nervous. “How can you stand this?!," he said. It seemed like the wrong question to me. In my synesthetic kind of way, the sounds of music seem to emanate ...

Piano: Sunna Gunnlaugs; Dred Scott Trio

Source: Music and More by Tim Niland
November 26, 2011

Sunna Gunnlaugs—Long Pair Bond (Sunny Sky, 2011) Icleandic pianist Sunna Gunnlaugs performs her latest album with the help of Porgrimur Jonsson on bass and Scott McLemore on drums. The group works very well together, on first listen it seems to be a self-functioning unit like the Keith Jarrett or Brad Mehldau trios, but closer listening shows the depth and thoughtfulness of the performances. The trio shows a great deal of mindfulness, approaching the music in the present moment and bringing ...

Trumpet player Daniel Rosenboom releases cinematic album while touring with Josh Groban

Source: Lauren Rogers
November 26, 2011

There is a filmmaker lurking within the musical vision of Daniel Rosenboom. It's no coincidence that Rosenboom's newest album, Fallen Angeles, is named after Los Angeles. After all, what city is more attached to the cinematic world than Hollywood, L.A.'s famous district? But the L.A. that Rosenboom sees isn't the sunlit, starry-struck paradise of people's imaginations. Rather, it's the darker side of L.A., an enigmatic town of broken souls, punctured dreams, and buried secrets. In other words, it's the L.A. ...
