Gerry Hemingway Quintet, Riptide

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards
November 29, 2011

Gerry Hemingway has been deftly mixing it up on drums with some of the most accomplished new jazz artists for years. He has a new album out with his quintet, Riptide (Clean Feed 227), and it shows how he is a jazz composer and bandleader of note as well. First, the quintet itself: along with Gerry on drums are a formidable two-reed tandem of Oscar Noriega and Ellery Eskelin, the electric guitar smarts of Terrence McManus, and the acoustic and ...

Pat Martino - Remember: A Tribute to Wes Montgomery (2006)

Source: Something Else!
November 28, 2011

Here are a couple of stories. One is amazing and funny. The other is just amazing. Wes Montgomery, the great jazz guitarist, didn't know how to read music. That's right, this is the man whose fingers blistered their way around such tunes as “Twisted Blues" and “Four On Six" and who released such monumental records as Boss Guitar, Full House, and Smokin' At The Half Note. (I know ... it's a Wynton Kelly record, but nobody really thinks of it ...

Yes - In the Present: Live from Lyon (2011)

Source: Something Else!
November 28, 2011

There was at least one benefit to the departure of Jon Anderson from Yes in 2008: The presence of new lead singer Benoit David immediately opened the door for a rewrite of what had become a very rote setlist. Anderson had always refused, for instance, to sing tunes from Yes' guitar-driven 1980 release Drama, recorded during a previous stint away from the legendary progressive rock band. David's arrival, however, coincided with a return for both Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes, ...

Achim Kaufmann - Verivyr (Pirouet - 2011) *****

Source: Free Jazz by Stef Gijssels
November 28, 2011

By Joe Higham On the first listen to this album I sensed that it would be a strong contender for 5 stars. It's an album that covers everything interesting and important in improvised music. It explores, swings, uses dissonance, melody, it surprises and delights you. In fact it's a lesson in what's not being taught in jazz conservatories world wide, how to make individual music that blurs boundaries and shows a sense of tradition. Achim Kaufmann has been on the ...

Tales of the Unusual follows on the heels of Lorraine Feather's album Ages, which received a 2011 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album. As with Ages, the words are all Lorraine's, with music by Feather's close longtime collaborators Russell Ferrante, Eddie Arkin and Shelly Berg, also featuring music by Duke Ellington, Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi, and a lyricized version of Nino Rota's “Rosa Aurata" from the Fellini film Juliet of the Spirits. The unusual tales on this album were ...
