Produced by fellow Detroit native Don Was, Ryder returns to his Motor City rock and soul roots. DETROIT, Mich.—Before Jack White, Ted Nugent, Bob Seger or Iggy Pop, Detroit's number one rock export was Mitch Ryder. Fronting the Detroit Wheels, Ryder spun out a string of rock 'n' soul hits—"Jenny Take a Ride," “Devil With a Blue Dress On / Good Golly Miss Molly" and “Sock It to Me, Baby"—in the mid-'60s that landed in the charts alongside the Beatles ...

Acker Bros Release "Henry Dreams of Tornadoes"
Source:
Victor Acker
By Herb Fountainbleu, Akron After Dark “Not Acker Bilk, Acker BROTHERS, you nit-wit!..."was the voice message from my editor, after I had just submitted what I considered to be a superior piece of journalism. I cringed...Not that Fuzak outfit out of Boston!..I sighed, and set myself to the task. After all, one must put food on the table mustn't one? In fact, I had covered and critiqued the brothers in a former life at the (Jazz) Examiner, where my work ...

Tony Bennett Complete Collection
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
A bit of Tony Bennett news was lost in the shuffle earlier this fall. Between the media blitz for Bennett's Duets II CD and damage control following his unfortunate 9/11 attack remarks on Howard Stern's radio show, word came that Sony was releasing a box set. Out now is Tony Bennett: The Complete Collection (Sony)—an aircraft carrier of a set that includes everything Bennett ever recorded in a studio. That's right, the mother lode, the works, the whole enchilada. And ...

Side A, "A New Margin": Vandermark, Wiik, Taylor Get It Going
Source:
Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards
Side A? A trio of Ken Vandermark, reeds, Havard Wiik, piano, Chad Taylor, drums. Their A New Margin (Clean Feed 235) seems like the right combination of inspired improvisation, appropriate and memorable composition, and collective spark. The compositional assignments are equally divided among the three, which makes sense since Ken and Chad do good work, and it turns out Havard does too. “Boxer" is a fitting and stirring beginning with a sort of modified ostinato that is in a lineage ...

Jason Adasiewicz's Sun Rooms - Spacer (2011)
Source:
Something Else!
One of the busiest players in Chicago's jazz/improvised music scenes, the name of vibraphonist and composer Jason Adasiewicz always seems to come up when discussing recordings by some of the most dynamic and cutting edge musicians and ensembles from that town. Adasiewicz himself have led a few combos on his own, and the latest, Sun Rooms, made its recording debut last year that was widely praised. And justifiably so. This trio, with Nate McBride on bass and Mike Reed on ...
