The Lucien Dubuis Trio and Marc Ribot - Ultime Cosmos (2009)

The Lucien Dubuis Trio and Marc Ribot - Ultime Cosmos (2009)

Source: Something Else!

Ultime Cosmos was not serious. At least, not serious in that We're Wearing Nice Suits, We're Going To Play Jazz kind of way. Heck, this wasn't even jazz, not in spirit anyway. A quick read of the instrumental lineup would definitely make a person think 'jazz'—contrabass clarinet, guitar, bass, drums—but the record had more of a rock/funk spirit. I can imagine Stanley Crouch turning up his nose. That's a good thing. Though Dubuis did switch over to alto here and ...

RareBit Readies "Daizo" LP on Non Projects + Premieres "Emergence"

Source: Leeor Brown

With the release of The Destroyer EP in 2011, musician / composer and visual artist Justin Hopkins, aka RareBit quickly established himself as an artist who knows his craft. Whereas The Destroyer, a collection of Justin's earlier work, dealt in dizzying cut and paste compositional techniques and songs with short run-times, Daizo, his full-length debut, takes us on an excursion of much greater distance. The same acute attention to sonic detail remains, however Daizo, tracks take advantage of the long ...

Charlie Haden and Hank Jones - Come Sunday (2012)

Charlie Haden and Hank Jones - Come Sunday (2012)

Source: Something Else!

It's a given that show tunes and Tin Pan Alley songs have provided plenty of fodder for jazz interpretations, especially in the decades before there were enough quality standards written specifically for jazz to fill up a fake book. There's long been another, almost forgotten, source for great jazz treatments, and that's the sturdy old spirituals still being heard in thousands of churches across the country every first day of the week. On this topic, I always think of Grant ...

Bluesy cover of Leonard Cohen classic highlights eclectic new album from Australia's Joanna Melas

Source: Lauren Rogers

It takes a certain amount of courage to cover a Leonard Cohen song. Doing it successfully is another matter. However, Australian singer Joanna Melas manages to accomplish the nearly impossible, offering a rendition of Cohen's timeless “First We Take Manhattan" that can actually stand on its own. Cohen's original version is a masterpiece of cinematic moodiness and grim delivery; its icy keyboards reflected the glacial temperatures of Cohen's detached vocal work. Melas thankfully takes a radically different approach, transforming its ...
