Jeff Kimmel Quartet - Charm Offensive (2011)

Source: Something Else!
January 8, 2012

At thirty-one minutes, this debut album by the Jeff Kimmel Quartet is shorter than some EP's, but bass clarinetist Kimmel and his friends make the most of their time.Charm Offensive, as the record is called, is the fruit from a grant by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, a vote of confidence from the community to where Kimmel moved to from Boston only about five years earlier. It's an investment that was justified: whereas another Chicago group, led by Jason ...

Bill Frisell - Go West: Music for the Films of Buster Keaton (2009)

Source: Something Else!
January 6, 2012

OK, so I tried the Pandora Radio thing again. After the first tune from my Marc Ribot channel, an excellent live version of his really screwy take on Jimi Hendrix' “The Wind Cries Mary," we ended up at a tune from Bill Frisell's Go West: Music For The Films Of Buster Keaton. I love the idea of a modern musician composing music for an “old" media event. I've never seen “Go West," but the descriptions I've read seem to bring ...

Stealers Wheel - Stuck in the Middle with You: The Hits Collection (1998)

Source: Something Else!
January 6, 2012

Having a hit single the first time around is either a blessing or a curse. It's a blessing because most musicians dream of instant recognition, but on the other hand sudden success means there's a lot to account for when it comes to future endeavors. The pressure is on to create something just as fabulous if not better. And that leads us to Stealers Wheel, a band from Paisley, Scotland, that bumped up against the too much, too soon dilemma. ...

Source: Two for the Show Media
January 5, 2012

Universal Mind is the perfect title for the newest release from Luis Perdomo. The three-way connection between the extraordinary jazz pianist and composer and his world-class collaborators, bassist Drew Gress and the legendary Jack DeJohnette on drums, is apparent from the first moments of this exhilarating new release from RKM Records. The Village Voice called Perdomo “a rather amazing improviser" and added, “The pianist is making a name for himself by feverishly assaulting the progressive edge of mainstream jazz." With ...

Lena Prima - Since the Storm (2010)

Source: Something Else!
January 5, 2012

Lena Prima centered this project with a pair of songs by her father, Louis Prima. But she didn't settle for the simple goal of glowing tribute, either to this legendary New Orleans-born purveyor of post-war jump blues or to his era's great American songbook. She had broader goals, and largely succeeds in achieving them. Growing up between Louis Prima's two lives in the Big Easy and in Las Vegas, Lena absorbed elements of both cultures, and that played out across ...
