Art Blakey Goes to the Movies
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Back in October 2010, I posted twice (here and here) about a little-known Art Blakey session recorded in May 1956 in New York for The Cool Voice of Rita Reys, a Dutch singer. Onthe album, Jazz Messengers Donald Byrd (tp), Hank Mobley (ts), Horace Silver (p), Doug Watkins (b) and Blakey (d) accompanied a singer, a rarity for the hard-bop group. Another one of these superb Blakey oddities is the soundtrack to Des Femmes Disparaissent. These tracks were recorded in ...

The Friday Morning Listen: Frank Zappa - We're Only in It for the Money (1968)

Something Else!
The drama surrounding the whole SOPA and PIPA bills was kind of fun to see play out. It was like the corporate interests legislators who were behind the bills had absolutely no idea that their proposals might have unintended consequences: ones that would generate a firestorm of passion. Between the website blackouts and the avalanche of phone calls and emails that inundated congressional offices, it appears that some eyes have finally been opened. And then, shortly after the day of ...

Tania Maria - Tempo (2012)
Source:
Something Else!
One of Brazil's brightest performers of the last three decades, Tania Maria led a band by the age of 13, and has a distinctively exuberant vocal and percussive piano style as part of her wide skill set. An international pop star since the 1980's, she's probably best known for her worldwide pop hit song Come With Me," but she's also prominent in the world of jazz. She's accomplished enough as a pianist to dazzle even when going on-on-one with a ...

JazzSnaps: Randy Brooks (1946)
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Randy Brooks played trumpet like Harry James. Lots of pep and power with plenty of bent notes. Brooks recorded with Hal Kemp in the late 1930s, Claude Thornhill in '42 and Les Brown in '43 and '44. In 1945, Brooks formed a band that included tenor saxophonist Stan Getz and Getz's vocalist wife Beverly Byrne. The band recorded until 1947, the year of one of Brooks' biggest hits, Tenderly. But swing was his thing at a time when fans were ...
