Pianist/composer Dan Cray's first four CDs—trio recordings featuring his Chicago-based threesome of bassist Clark Sommers and drummer Greg Wyser-Pratte—built their repertoires around enticing cover versions of standards and jazz classics. And the program now spotlights mostly Cray originals, with only two covers. ...

New Hartmut Hillmann Band album rooted in both German folk and American jazz

Source: Lauren Rogers

At one point in time, the relentlessly percolating bass lines of Hartmut Hillmann defied categorization. So Hillmann started referring to it as “urban folk funk." It did not go over well. “That irritated critics and record companies so I stopped doing it," Hillmann revealed. An acclaimed six-string bass guitarist, Hillmann's distinct style is rooted both in German folk music and iconoclastic American jazz artists such as Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock. That international and generational mishmash fuels the frenzied energy ...

Released by Creative Sources Recordings: Numbers (CS 201 CD), a duo album by composer, performer and electronic musician Richard Barrett and guitarist, improviser and constructor Han-earl Park. Numbers is a high-energy, quick-footed, scatter-brained two hander—a looping, convoluted, interactive dance made audible—a musical fender bender involving electroacoustic complexities and (physio)logical splutter-cuts, jump-cuts and match-cuts—an intense white- knuckle extemporization unit—the duo of composer, performer and electronic musician Richard Barrett and guitarist, improviser and constructor Han-earl Park.
