Is Corinne's Tickled Pink The New Black This Summer?
Source:
Corinne Mammana
Evocative and provocative, Tickled Pink, the latest single release from Corinne, out now and available everywhere, infuses a modern spin on bossa jazz. She flirts with a pop sensibility, as well as her lyrical romantic subject, yet maintains the integrity of the traditional style. The song is both an instant throwback to another time and a modern classic. With just one listen, your toes feel equally buried in the sandy beaches of Rio ’24 or ’64. Corinne is an old ...

Backgrounder: Phineas Newborn's Great Jazz Piano
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Following my post on Howard McGhee's 1961 album, Maggie's Back in Town, I received many emails asking me to feature Phineas Newborn Jr. This week's Backgrounder speaks volumes about his technique and touch. If I played this album as a blindfold test, many might guess s young Oscar Peterson. Born in Whiteville, Tenn., in 1931, Newborn played often in Memphis with his father and other relatives in an R&B band in the late 1940s. He shifted to jazz in the ...

All About Jazz
Tracks include genius remake of Beatles’ classic “Eleanor Rigby” Album Release Show + Birthday Party 8-10pm CDT, July 17, 2024 Fulton Street Collective 1821 West Hubbard Street Chicago, IL 60622 In the analogue age, it would have been hard for a musician as omni-dimensional as Chicago’s Andrew Vogt to build a credible profile embracing the sweep of genres in which he is active. Back then, music was tribal and monotheistic and binary choices were as complicated as it ...

Perfection: Art Farmer's Work of Art
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Trumpeter Art Farmer's first album as a leader was The Art Farmer Septet, recorded for Prestige on July 2, 1953—71 years ago. The lineup was Art Farmer (tp), Jimmy Cleveland (tb), Oscar Estelle (as,bar), Clifford Solomon (ts), Quincy Jones (p,arr), Monk Montgomery (el-b) and Sonny Johnson (d). The entire album is quite good, but the song that stands out for me is Quincy Jones's Work of Art, written and arranged by Jones specifically for this recording session. The song opens ...

Backgrounder: Bird With Strings: The Masters
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
In yesterday's post, I looked at Ken Peplowski's new album, Unheard Bird, featuring arrangements for Charlie “Bird" Parker with strings that were never recorded by the alto saxophonist. The natural followup for today's Backgrounder is the complete Charlie Parker With Strings: The Master Takes. This album gathers together all of the master takes of Bird's string sessions, which are still are remarkably beautiful and sensual. They also became the template that producer Norman Granz would use for his American songbook ...
