February 28, 2014

In the course of his prolific career as a jazz journalist, writing for the Los Angeles Times, the Newark Star-Ledger, and Down Beat magazine, among many other publications, Zan Stewart established himself as one of the best in the business. He won a prestigious ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award for his notes to an Eric Dolphy boxed set, and kept up a busy pace over a span of 35 years profiling major jazz musicians and annotating over two hundred albums. Warne Marsh: Music for Prancing

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers
February 27, 2014

In the 1950s, tenor saxophonist Warne Marsh sounded like Stan Getz with parts missing. A pioneer of the Lennie Tristano-influenced cool jazz movement of the late 1940s and early '50s, Marsh was born in Los Angeles and gigged and recorded there as a leader between 1952 and 1957 before shifting to New York for a few years and then moving back to L.A. in the mid-'60s. Getz's cool sound came from his passion for Lester Young. George Wein told me ...

February 26, 2014

Topics of Conversation is the debut album from bassist and composer Tim Wolfe, Jr. The album is a nod to the great tradition of East coast hard-bop and features Wolfe’s original compositions. The band on the album is comprised of first-call talent in the Philadelphia area: guitarist Larry Tamanini (who lends an original composition to the album), vibraphonist Adam Pfannenstiel, saxophonist Thomas Razler, and drummer Bill Avayou. Wolfe’s compositional style is melody-driven, leaving lots of space for the band members’ ...

Chris Connor: Gershwin Almanac

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers
February 26, 2014

The late Chris Connor remains one of my favorite singers. Unfairly likened to June Christy, Chris had a lower, huskier sound and greater vocal control. Both sang with Stan Kenton, Christy was West Coast and Chris was East Coast and both had a bruised, slick-chick sound—the ache of being jilted. Chris was a songsmith. She told me she often spent downtime at music stores leafing through sheet music in search of songs other singers had missed. Back then, you were ...

5 CD Discoveries of the Week

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers
February 25, 2014

This week, I recommend a pair of superb jazz orchestral CDs, new music from a cutting-edge Blue Note artist, and two terrific rock sets... Dig arrangers Gil Evans and Thad Jones? Then you're going to love the Bill Kirchner Nonet's Lifeline (Jazzheads). Recorded live in 2001, Bill's arranging style is just as multilayered and brooding as Evans and as shrewd and mighty as Jones. Songs latch onto a mood and develop with sharp elegance and intelligence, telling a story and ...
