Jazz Score: 'Una Bella Grinta'
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
One of my favorite and little-known jazz scores for a mid-1960s film was recorded in Italy. The film was the 1965 Italian drama Una Bella Grinta (The Reckless), written and directed by Giuliano Montaldo, who followed up with Grand Slam in 1967, starring Edward G. Robinson, Klaus Kinski and Janet Leigh. The spectacular music for Una Bella Grinta was composed and arranged by Piero Umiliani, who helped usher in the jazz-saturated European film score in the 1960 and '70s. Most ...

10 CD Discoveries of the Week
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
All kinds of stuff for you this week—from '70s soul and funk-fusion to funk-bluegrass, big band and American Songbook... Harvey Mason—Chameleon (Concord). On his new jazz-fusion album, Harvey Mason shows he hasn't lost his funky '70s touch. For decades, Mason has been one of the most in-demand studio drummers, recording behind dozens of top artists. He also was the drummer on Herbie Hancock's seminal Head Hunters album in 1973. On this CD, Mason integrates polyrhythms, a Fender Rhodes, moody synthesizers ...

Louis Armstrong & The All Stars: Newport 1956 &1958 (4 LPs - #3007)
Source:
Michael Ricci
The Jubilance That Is The Newport Jazz Festival For 60 years, every top name in jazz has seemingly made it up to Newport at least once, if not multiple times. Louis Armstrong was a fixture for many years and two of his complete sets, from the 1956 and 1958 festivals, are being released here in their entirety for the very first time. Impresario extraordinaire George Wein, the catalyst behind the NJF, was (and still is) the perfect matchmaker in deciding ...

Bill Potts: 'How Insensitive'
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
One of the rarest albums by pianist-arranger Bill Potts is How Insensitive (Decca). It was recorded by Brasilia Nueve (New Brazil)—a studio band assembled in New York in May 1967. The album seems to have been intended as an Easy Listening entry, but like all things by Potts, the album shows exceptional arranging and smarts. So who was in this one-shot Brasilia Nueve band? Oh, just the cream of the New York studio scene in need of a few bucks ...

MoonJune To Release New Studio Album By Indonesian Guitar Master Tohpati Featuring Jimmy Haslip And Chad Wackerman
Source:
Glass Onyon PR - Keith James
New York, NY - With Tohpati’s 3rd release (2nd as a trio) on MoonJune, recorded in Los Angeles in September 2013, we see the Beckian progressive metal riffing of 2012’s Tohpati Bertiga 'Riot' supplanted by a pairing of compositional dexterity along with the unique guitar voice that is the essence of Tohpati, one of Indonesia's most famous guitar players. Though there is no shortage of acrobatic axe-wielding on 'Tribal Dance', Tohpati’s democratic interplay with the formidable world class rhythm section ...
