One of the most important collections of Sal Mosca's piano work has just hit the market. The five-CD package—Sal Mosca: Too Marvelous for Words (Cadence)—includes 56 tracks of the the pianist performing on tour in the Netherlands in June 1981. The material features five solo concerts by Mosca between June 19 and June 24 and gives us an opportunity to hear him at his finest. For those not in the know, Mosca was probably the purest exponent of the Lennie ...

American 'Rubber Soul' Rules
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
The Beatles' Rubber Soul turns 50 this Sunday—the American version, that is. The British version of the album came out out three days earlier in 1965. As I write in my Wall Street Journal essay (go here), the two versions were a bit different in tracks and tone. For one, the U.K version held 14 songs while the American album featured 12. More important, the American LP dropped two songs from the British version and replaced two others for what ...

From 'Rambo' to 'Lo-Fi'
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
In July 1956, Frank Wess recorded Trombones & Flute, a gorgeous album for Savoy featuring his swinging flute backed by four punchy trombones and a sterling rhythm section arranged by Frank Foster. I recently posted about the album here. One of the album's highlights is Lo-Fi, which is credited to Foster. But as reader Nate Larson points out, the song's main melody line appears to be a clone of Rambo, which was written by J.J. Johnson (above) and Count Basie ...

Joe Castro: Lush Life
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Jazz has always had more than its fair share of lucky personalities—highly charismatic, captivating artists who could win over producers, club owners and peers just as easily as they could break audience hearts with their music. One of the most complex and least-known among them was Joe Castro, an upbeat, easy-going and gregarious pianist who was close with Dave Brubeck, Zoot Sims, Teddy Edwards, Duke Ellington, Lucky Thompson, Louis Armstrong and June Christy, to name a few. But Castro's spell ...

Bassist José Fallot Releases "Another Romantic Volume #2"
Source:
Plaza Mayor Company ltd
José Fallot new album Another Romantic Volume #2 has a precious touch of timeless elegance. No doubt the leader's fine bass playing and his artistry in composing have a lot to do with that. As a matter of fact, his music is not of the kind that struggles and roars. Smoothly running on the safe and bright side of jazz, it flows with taste and mastery, always paying attention to melody and balance. All along the album the band are ...
