Toshiko Akiyoshi: United Notions

Toshiko Akiyoshi: United Notions

Globalization once was a guiding principal for the United States. With the proliferation of Communism in the 1950s, America moved quickly to make friends with as many countries around the world as it could. The United Nations was a big deal, Sixth Ave. in New York was known as Avenue of the Americas and the U.S. favored nations in Asia and Africa winning their independence after years of colonial rule. On the cutting edge of American international diplomacy was jazz. ...

Woody Shaw: The Tour, Vol. 1

Woody Shaw: The Tour, Vol. 1

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Let's stick with 1976. Yesterday I posted about Dolo Coker's California Hard, a superb album recorded by the pianist for Xanadu in December of that year. Today, let's dig a newly released album by a working band formed by drummer Louis Hayes in '76 to tour Europe. The live album, Woody Shaw and Louis Hayes: The Tour, Volume One (High Note), was recorded in Stuttgart, Germany, on March 22, 1976. Recorded at the height of the jazz-rock fusion movement—when mysticism, ...

Dolo Coker: California Hard

Dolo Coker: California Hard

Dolo Coker was an insider's jazz musician. The pianist was little known except among his peers. Coker spent much of his career playing and recording as a sideman and didn't record his first leadership date until 1976, when he was 49. One of his most interesting leadership albums is California Hard (Xanadu), featuring Blue Mitchell on trumpet and flugelhorn and Art Pepper on alto and tenor saxophones. The album was digitally remastered from tapes by Don Schlitten of Xanadu and ...

More Bird With Strings

More Bird With Strings

In the wake of my post on the lost string arrangements for Charlie Parker (go here), I was curious about how these scores wound up in the hands of alto saxophonist Clark Gibson and the orchestra he assembled in 2015 for his album, The Lost Arrangements of Bird With Strings (go here). So I reached out to Jeff Sultanof, who helped edit the music scores and parts for publication and availability to the public through ejazzlinescom. For those unfamiliar with ...

The Inimitable Teddy Edwards

The Inimitable Teddy Edwards

As part of its reissue of select albums on the Xanadu label, Resonance Records has just released The Inimitable Teddy Edwards, which was recorded in June 1976. The album is important because it features tenor saxophonist Edwards in spectacular form accompanied by a sterling trio—Duke Jordan (p), Larry Ridley (b) and Freddie Waits (d). By '76, Edwards had been around since the mid-1940s but never seemed to be able to forge a brand image for himself as a leader. Part ...

Lost Bird With Strings

Late Friday afternoon, I grabbed coffee with Carl Woideck, the author of Charlie Parker: His Music and Life (University of Michigan Press) and an instructor of jazz, rock and music histories at the University of Oregon. Carl is a long-time JazzWax reader. As we chatted about this and that, Carl mentioned that he had just returned from the  Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University in New Jersey and asked if I knew that there were many more string arrangements ...
