Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Back in 2009, Mosaic Records issued Classic Columbia, Okeh and Vocalion Lester Young With Count Basie (1936-1940) , a 4-CD boxed set covering four years. Time passed, and now Mosaic has issued a much deeper and broader set of Young: Classic 1936-1947 Count Basie and Lester Young Studio Sessions, an 8-CD box covering nine years. What's the difference? The official explanation is a bit of a ...

Beach Boys: Morgan Sessions
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
At the dawn of the 1960s, the Beach Boys were a teenage vocal group who bridged elements of West Coast jazz with California pop rock. Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Arranger Pete Rugolo is an acquired taste. Listening to virtually all of his leadership albums in the 1950s and early '60s yesterday, I initially dismissed many of them as bombastic, elephantine works that relied too often on shrill trumpets and tympani drums. What's more, many of the albums featured a stray clunker so bad that they made me question Rugolo's taste and judgment. That was my first listen. By the third go-through, I was in a state of bliss, surprised ...
