Eddie Diehl: Well, Here It Is

Eddie Diehl: Well, Here It Is

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

If you had the misfortune as a jazz musician to come up in the early 1960s, you were likely ill prepared to cope with the seismic shift in the music landscape as rock and soul swept away an entire generation of potential listeners. One of these victims was Eddie Diehl, a beautiful guitarist with gorgeous taste who found it increasingly difficult to earn a living. On his first recording, Diehl had the distinction of replacing guitarist Grant Green on Jack ...

Jack Montrose and Pete Jolly

Jack Montrose and Pete Jolly

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Between 1985 and 1990, tenor saxophonist Jack Montrose recorded three sterling albums in Hollywood with pianist and friend Pete Jolly. What the three albums had in common was the music of David Holt. They also featured the same quartet: Jack Montrose (ts), Pete Jolly (p), Chuck Berghofer (b) and Nick Martinis (d). All three albums—Better Late Than Never (1985), Spread a Little Joy (1987) and Let's Do It (1990) appeared on obscure labels and two of the three don't seem ...

Musical genres have been melding for ages, yet pianist/composer David Lopato has developed an eclectic East-West fusion that truly has no precedent. A respected educator, inventive composer, inveterate musical explorer, and fearless sonic pioneer who has traveled a highly personal “silk road,” Lopato is releasing the extraordinary Gendhing for a Spirit Rising on September 8 via Global Coolant Records. This two-CD set is the culmination of the mesmerizing musical landscape he has cultivated since his first encounter with Javanese gamelan ...

Jazz aficionados rejoice! Mrshall Blonstein's Audio Fidelity is releasing pioneering jazz-rock fusion legends Weather Report's classic album Heavy Weather on Limited Edition Hybrid SACD! Heavy Weather remains the touchstone—and easily the best-selling album by Weather Report. Formed in 1971 and continuing until 1986, the group's creative axis was keyboardist/composer Joe Zawinul and saxophonist/composer Wayne Shorter. Borrowing tinges of earthtones from Cannonball Adderley's sanctified small groups of the 1960s and watercolors from the 1969 Miles Davis album In A Silent Way, ...

In October of 2016, renowned promoter/producer Takao Ishizuka released the first solo piano/vocal album of 6-time Juno nominated jazz artist Carol Welsman in Japan. The album reached #5 on the Japan Jazz Chart, remained top 20 for four months and was the top #1 selling album for over five months at Yamano Music, Tokyo’s prominent jazz retailer. Composer/Arranger Mica Bethea Releases Stage ‘n Studio -- Unique Concept Double-disc Big Band Album

Source: Mouthpiece Music

Mica Bethea’s music isn’t easy to categorize. He composes and arranges charts for big bands, but he’s unlike any other artist working in the genre. Stage 'N Studio is his second CD as a leader. The release is a two-disc set, and, staying true to his own muse, he decided to record the music twice, first in the studio and then in live performance at the University of North Florida, his alma mater. Bethea is an amazing young man. He ...

Bobby Hutcherson: The Kicker

Bobby Hutcherson: The Kicker

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

It's unclear why Bobby Hutcherson's The Kicker wasn't released by Blue Note until 1999, despite being recorded in 1963. The album is flawless as far as I can tell. It swings, it's engaging, the musicians on the session were spectacular and there don't appear to be any instrumental errors or microphone snafus. If I were guessing, I'd say the reason might have been because Grant Green recorded Joe Henderson's The Kicker on his Solid album in June 1964 (which then ...
