Dan Adler: Friends on the Moon
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
As most readers know, I rarely feature new jazz albums at JazzWax. I simply don't have the time. My heart is in the music of the 1940s, '50s and '60s, and JazzWax is really an educational blog providing those in the know and those new to jazz with a roadmap and recommendations. Every so often, however, a track pops up that lures me into a knockout new-album experience. Dan Adler's new Friends on the Moon is one of those standouts. ...

These choices below (aside from top 10 new songs of the year) were submitted to the Jazz Journalists’ Association and NPR Music 2018 compilations. (The latter ...

Brazilian Bassist Marcos Milagres Releases His First Album As A Leader
Source:
Marcos Milagres
The album is entitled Feira (Portuguese for Street Market). As the name suggests, the music portrays a mix of scents and colors from great Brazilian masters like Hermeto Pascoal, Egberto Gismonti, Antonio Carlos Jobim and its interaction with jazz improvisation and the rhythms and sounds of the American continents. His electric bass performance is pushed to its boundaries, doing melodies, grooves, harmonies; many times all together, using an arsenal of techniques he has developed over the years. Impressive solos and ...

Roberto's superb album, Il Bello Del Jazz, accompanying alto saxophonist Herb Geller, had just reached the U.S. after being released in Italy in 2006. Over the years, Roberto and I have remained in touch, with Roberto sending along his latest releases. All have been superb, especially his Lee Morgan Rewind Vols. 1 and 2.
