"Freedom Riders" CD Review by indie-music.com

Although he may not be a familiar name to most, Willerm Delisfort makes jazz that must be heard. All three of his selections are excellent. Delisfort doesn't take centerstage until Tuskegee Experiment", however, which is where his piano playing truly shines. This one features wonderful saxophone and trumpet interplay, as well as standout bass once again. ...

By the mid-1960s, Latin-jazz was in rapid transition. Americans' appetite for Cuban dance music had cooled as tensions between Fidel Castro and the United States heated up in the early 1960s. At the same time, new forms of Latin music were emerging from the Puerto Rican neighborhoods of New York's Spanish Harlem and South Bronx. Largely influenced by the surging popularity of soul and funk, this new Latin music featured chunkier beats and new instrument configurations. The sound would eventually ...

Dylan Different is an unusual sort of Bob Dylan tribute album. Jazz icon Ben Sidran adds his musical style and a lifetime of reflection to 12 of Dylan's most memorable songs ("Highway 61 Revisited," Tangled up in Blue" and Blowin' in the Wind" among them).
Dylan Different was recorded in an Alsatian farm house with French musician/singer Rodolph Burger as well as Italian bassist Marcello Gioullianai and Alberto Malo, a Spanish drummer currently living in Switzerland. The European aspect of ...

Michael Ricci
Grammy nominated jazz vocalist Renee Manning is known for her robust voice, rich tones and impeccable time making her truly a musician's vocalist. Her new release, All Grown Up, showcases those attributes in a soothing, quieter set parallel to the powerful big band selections she's known for. Her debut in the jazz world as a singer with the Mel Lewis Orchestra (from 1983-1989) was the longest tenure of any vocalist associated with the organization. By chance, Mr. Lewis heard Renee ...

See! Hear! by Richard Kamins
Historicity - Vijay Iyer Trio - (ACT) - In a year that has been filled with excellent recordings, few have received more press than pianist Vijay Iyer's first piano trio CD. Deservedly so - this is an impressive program, filled with sparkling interplay, visceral intensity, and songs that make one think about the creative musician's role in the arts and society. Much has been made of the material Iyer chose to record, from M.I.A.'s Galang to Julius Hemphill's Dogon A.D." ...
