Shirley Clarke's Documentary "Ornette Made in America" Available as Video on Demand

Source: Michael Ricci

ORNETTE: MADE IN AMERICA is the last film by the great American independent filmmaker Shirley Clarke. She portrays Ornette Coleman, one of the most influential and controversial musicians in jazz. Clarke uses performances of Coleman's ”Skies of America”, a composition for symphonic orchestra and jazz combo, as her point of departure. She kicks off in Coleman's birthplace with a performance by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, then zigzags back to Berkeley before moving on to Morocco and Italy.

DVD Review: Spike Lee Films "Passing Strange"

Source: Pop Dose

Some stage plays and musicals are adapted into films. Others are simply filmed. That would seem to be the easier gigbut if youve suffered through one where the camera never moved, or never seemed to be in the right place, and the whole static bore made you wonder why anyone thought it was worthwhile to see it live in the first place you know theres nothing simple about it. The chance to see the original cast performing the piece as ...

Brecker and Blake

Brecker and Blake

Source: Rifftides by Doug Ramsey

Speaking of Seamus Blake (see the item below), I looked for a video clip with him in action and came across one of the 28-year-old Blake in heavy company. He follows the late Michael Brecker in solo on Charles Mingus's “Goodbye Porkpie Hat." All of the other information I can give you is that this was in Japan in 1999 and that the pianist is David Kikoski. The camera work suggests that this was filmed during an earthquake of at ...
