George Shearing, the ebullient jazz pianist who wrote the standard Lullaby of Birdland" and had a string of hits both with and without his quintet, has died. He was 91. Shearing, blind since birth, died early Monday morning in Manhattan of congestive heart failure, his longtime manager Dale Sheets said. Trumpeter, singer, and composer Joseph Wingy" Manone was born on this date in 1900. As a boy in New Orleans, he lost an arm as a result of a streetcar accident, but this didn't stop him from taking up a musical instrument. His nickname has to rank as a bitof gallows humor, although Manone's 1948 autobiography was entitled Trumpeton the Wing.
