STLJN Saturday Video Showcase: A Peter Bernstein Sampler

STLJN Saturday Video Showcase: A Peter Bernstein Sampler

Today, we're serving up some video clips showcasing guitarist Peter Bernstein, who will be performing with pianist Peter Martin at 8:00 p.m. next Saturday, November 2 at the Sheldon Concert Hall. The concert, the first this season in Martin's ongoing series at the Sheldon, is billed as a performance of music associated with Blue Note Records, which seems fitting since Bernstein was part of the Blue Note 7, a group formed in 2008 by the label for an album and ...

Blossom Dearie: '54, '65, '72 And '83

Blossom Dearie: '54, '65, '72 And '83

Singer-pianist Blossom Dearie was a singular artist of fascinating contrasts. She was hipper than many of the men she played with and could swing just as hard. She had a “good girl" look yet struggled with a husband (Bobby Jaspar) who was addicted to heroin. She was a jazzy cocktail-cabaret act but could arrange vocal and instrumental ensembles with the best of them. She was American yet was as Parisian as frittés. She seemed sweet but didn't hesitate to tear ...

Ware and Peter Brötzmann. As organizer of the annual Vision ...

This week, let's take a look at “Abyssinian: A Gospel Celebration," the extended work composed by trumpeter Wynton Marsalis that currently is on tour and scheduled for a St. Louis stop next Friday, October 18 at the Touhill Performing Arts Center. Premiered in 2008 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Harlem's Abyssinian Baptist Church, “Abyssinian" incorporates a range of musical styles, from spirituals to hard bop, and has been re-staged this year as a traveling production featuring the Jazz at ...

Bobby Hutcherson: France, 1969

Bobby Hutcherson: France, 1969

Searching around YouTube yesterday, I found a gorgeous clip. The following video features vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson with tenor saxophonist Harold Land on July 25, 1969 at the Juan Les Pins Jazz Festival in Antibes, France. They were backed by Stanley Cowell (p), Reggie Johnson (b) and Joe Chambers (d). This clip features the quintet on Herzog, which Hutcherson and Land recorded a year earlier on Hutcherson's album Total Eclipse (Blue Note). Dig the heat of Land against the coolness of ...
